Why is it that if you see a small spider coming towards you while you are barefoot and on the potty, your mind translates it to looking like this: http://www.wired.com/2013/12/absurd-creature-of-the-week-2/

??? Bathrooms and tropical parts of the earth. Two things to avoid now. FOREVER

Why? Why must such things exist?

No - try barefoot and on the potty and a camel cricket comes in and stares you down. Note that camel crickets jump AT you instead of away from you like normal crickets do. I was stuck. I screamed. I don't normally scream but I needed hubby to come...with his big shoe....NOW!!!!

We have spiders, some big red ones, and those crickets (wife calls them cave crickets) in the basement. It's odd, I went to the basement last week to bring up some canning jars and noticed in the corner several crickets that had been caught in a web. Got upstairs with two boxes of jars and found a big red mother spider frantically trying to do something with her large sack of eggs....... soooo, I took her and her eggs right back to the basement to carry on with keeping the cricket population under control. Wife is scared of the crickets, as you say, they jump towards her, spiders don't bother her. Anyway, she was all for turning the spider back loose in the basement.

Couldn't help but remember once my cat encountered a very large grasshopper on our carport. Started with the usual cautious approach and sniffing said hopper. Each time Samantha (cat, not hopper:thumbs:) did so, the hopper jumped away some 4-5 feet, and routine started over. After about the fourth time, the hopper was facing Sam and as Sam approached the hopper jumped TOWARD Sam and it scared the bejeebers out of her. She turned and hightailed it out of sight, and I was sore from laughing so much and hard.
Animals are simply a hoot, and I thank God for the pleasure - of many aspects - that they afford us!!

I had to look up a camel cricket. Yuck! I don't think I've ever seen one and hope not to!

Leaving Australia has meant leaving ALL the potentially lethal flora and fauna behind. I was squatting out West one time and we had a flush loo, but there were sweet little frogs living under the rim, which made me quite tense about lingering on the loo....to this day I have a horror of froggies on my derrière.

Of course New Zealand has the weka a large ugly insect, but it is the land that tries to kill you here, earthquakes, volcanoes, sink holes...that sort of thing!

I looked up Camel Cricket. I have about 100 or more living under the fiberglass "rock" that covers my well. Now that I know they are an invasive species, I may need to start the corrective process.

A shotgun might do less damage than a blowtorch: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/07/16/seattle-house-fire-spider/12724817/

So today at work, sitting there reading a book, I thought "I should take this home and review tomorrow's work some more." I leaned forward to shut the book and a SPIDER came out from underneath and ran towards me.

Twice lately!!! What is this? It crawled to the underside of the desktop. A couple students tried to hunt it down for me but couldn't find it, so it is just there. Waiting for me. As is the book, which stayed right where it was. I might have to be sick and home for the average lifetime span of a spider. Agh!

We have those Hobo Spiders, and they are GNARLY !!!! They can't climb well, so they fall in the bathroom sink, or your tub, or yes, the potty. The other day I picked up some planks, and about 20 of them scurried away. Awful critters, them Hobo Spiders.

We also have the Star Bellied Orb Weaver, that is harmless to humans, but is so big and ugly that grown men jump off roofs when they see them.

Ugh- we have orb weavers here. I am glad to know they are not poisonous. I saw them and just assumed they were the equivalent of death.
