Ok. I just finished reading all 31 pages of the thread about which Christian books your are reading besides the Bible just to make sure this is not a duplicate. whew!

Ok, in this one, please list any biographies of Missionaries you have read or are reading now. IMO reading a Missionary's biography or autobiography is one of the most helpful books besides the Bible that one could read. It gets past all the 'distractions' of theologies, histories and 'how-tos' that we often fill our minds and lives up with and "puts shoe leather" to our walk with Christ.

That being said, I have read:
"I will die free" by Noble Alexander. Imprisoned in Cuba 1962 for preaching the Gospel.
"God's Smuggler" by Brother Andrew. Bible smuggler in Yugoslav 1957.
"This poor man cried" by Norman Rohrer. Story of larry Wardand his work in 'Food for the Hungry' missions worldwide.
"Peace Child" by Don Richardson. Autobiography of one man and his family's journey to the head hunter/cannibals of New Guinea to bring them the Gospel in 1962.
"Bruchko" by Bruce Olson. Autobiography of this man's journey into the South American jungles to bring the Gospel to the Motilone Indians at the age of 19 in 1961.
"Jonathan Goforth" by Rosalind Goforth. The story of this great missionary's work in China for his Saviour.

I haven't read it yet but Amy Carmichael wrote one--I think it is called A chance to live. I hear it is a "must read."

    What a sad thing.
This thread was started several days ago, and we have ONE person who has replied????

No surprise then that the Western Christian church is a non-issue in society. If folks are not reading about our Missionaries and what they went through to carrry the Gospel to the lost, then they are not interested in doing anything about it themselves.

    Shame, shame and shame....

Thank you SW. You're right about Jim Elliot but I must point out that there are hundreds of others out there who don't have the notoriety nor the press coverage as the Elliots and their stories are also, "Must read".

I was also reading some stuff about Adonirum Judson recently.

And of course, I like to read the Voice of the Martyrs stuff.

It is an auto-biography...but it was called "And the Word Came With Power" by Joanne Shettler. I read it in seminary as part of my missiology class text. I read it in 2 hours all in one setting. It was that good. Anyone who knows me well knows that I am normally a slow reader and will take months top read a whole book.

Joseph; I urge you to get the book
    Peace Child, by Don Richardson.
From page one to the last page you will not want to put it down either.
This man took his wife into Iryan Jaya (Netherlands New Guinea) to evangelize the head hunting cannibals. What a story! Also an auto-biography.

    Another good one is:

Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret available with Microsoft Reader through the Christian Classics Ethereal Library.

"Peace Child" by Don Richardson is great, he certainly does not do evangelism the standard, conservative ways!!!
Not an biography but Richardson has written another excellect missionary book called, "Eternity in their Hearts"

I wanna get that one. I also have 'Lords of the Earth' by Richardson. It, too, is about the head hunting cannibals and their conversion to christianity. Does 'Eternity...' follow the same vein?

BTW; thank you too all who have replied. You are beginning to encourage my heart that our Missionaries are not totally forgotten.

    Hey Jim,

I think I either read that in seminary or heard the story before. If it is the same one I am thinking about, it is very good.

"Lord's of the Earth" is the story of Stan Dale who evangelized the Yali tribesmen of Iryan Jaya's Snow Mountains. They were head hunting cannibals until they met Christ.
The book is authored by Don Richardson, a close friend of Stan Dale and his wife. Sadly, Stan Dale and his friend, Phil Masters, fell victim to the head hunter/ cannibals.
