"The Love of God," though not my favourite hymn on the list (that particular honour goes to "And Can It Be"), gets a special mention - as I have said elsewhere, its third stanza is the most beautiful piece of sacred verse set to music, ever.

I hope you folks will indulge me a little. A little talk that I give every once in a while that I call "Top Ten". This is for fun, for all those mentioned, but most of all it is for Him.


I love to sing. I’m not very good at it. But I love it. I have always believed that it wasn’t the quality of the voices, but the attitude of the hearts that made a choir. Choral music has been a big part of my life. There is a saying attributed to Martin Luther where the reformer is quoted “There is nothing the Devil fears more than Christians singing”. I’d like to share with you my “top ten” songs. These are songs that have special associations with people in my life.

The first is a Malotte’s version of the “The Lord’s Prayer”. I think that Mario Lanza’s recording is the most haunting that I have heard. And the best performance of it that I have ever heard "live" was done by our choral director in Florida, Carolyn McShan. But the reason that this song is special to me is because of my Grandmother, Esther Jacob. Grandma had three sons, and six grandsons. I happen to be the shortest of the grandsons. And there was nothing that she liked more than to have these grandsons over to spend the night. As we got older and ornerier this got to be a challenge. This was her favorite song. And she sang it as a lullaby to us. Short, very independent and very Lutheran. She loved her Lord, and her family, especially her grandsons.

The second is “Jesus Loves Me”. It has been said that there is no more succinct distillation of the Good News than this song. My special person for this song was our neighbor in Whitehall, Ohio, Mrs. Armentrout. Mrs. Armentrout held an after school Bible school in her garage. We memorized bible verses. She taught us to sing about Zacheaus. And she told us bible stories with felt characters. Now a day we have Power Point and Veggies Tales. And I wouldn’t go back. But remember those felt characters. Was there really a difference between the set for “Noah” and “Moses and Pharaoh”? Where she got the patience to teach that rambunctious and raggedy group of kids about Jesus, I don’t know. Well maybe I do. Mrs. Armentrout was an alcoholic. She had spent years in bondage to her addiction. She had one daughter, who got invited to a youth rally, and there she met Jesus. And then she took Jesus home to meet her mother. Talk about changed lives.

The third song is a hymn. “It is well with my soul”. It is one of my daughter’s favorites. The incredible story of Horatio Safford. Losing his children in a shipwreck. Losing his business to the Chicago fire and still able to write: When peace like a river attendeth my soul and sorrows like sea billows roll. ……It is well with my soul.

The fourth is “How Great thou Art”. My maternal grandfather’s favorite. Nolan Murphy was a man’s man. He wasn’t a particularly pious man. For most of his life he had kind of an arrangement with God. If God wouldn’t bother him, he wouldn’t bother God. He had no active antipathy towards the church. But he would have been a lot happier worshipping with a golf club or a tennis racket or a fishing rod in his hand than a hymnbook or a bible. Tell you something; he could wipe me all over a tennis court until I was 16 (he would have been almost 70). And he liked nothing better than to take his grandchildren golfing, fishing, or to a football or basketball game. He used to take me to HS basketball playoffs and Ohio State football and basketball games. Everybody called him GP at his insistence, because he was “too young to be a grandfather”. I was the number one grandson so I got him longer than any of the others. I adored him. I still miss him. I mentioned that he wasn’t particularly pious. I did have the opportunity to share the good news with him 3 years before he died. And later he did share with me that his favorite hymn was "How great thou Art".

The fifth is the Baptist National Anthem, Amazing Grace. In 1981, I had the opportunity to serve as a substitute teacher at Spencer Memorial Baptist School. I was under-employed at the time and a baby Christian. $30 bucks for a 6 ½ hour day looked pretty good. I shared an office with a remarkable lady named Martha Futrell. Martha had a heart condition and she really didn’t have any business teaching school. No business but God’s business, that is. I came in one morning marveling about the story of John Newton and how amazing grace really is. And she related that her favorite verse of that song is the last one: When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun. We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’ve first begun. John Newton didn’t write that verse. But it is great and you know that wasn’t even in the Methodist hymnal till 1986.

The sixth is a Ricky Skaggs song. “Somebody’s praying, I can feel it, somebody’s praying for me”. This song was introduced to me by a lady named Kim Toney. Her husband’s name was Gray Toney. Talk about confusing. Kim’s spiritual gift was encouragement. Gray’s spiritual gif was playing the banjo. Now don’t you snicker like that, give me a guitar player, Gray on the banjo and somebody on the harmonica and any four men from this choir and we could do a version of “I’ll fly Away” so that when we were finished we’d all look up and say, “Why is the roof still here? I’m ready.” Back to the song. I have had the opportunity to sing solo songs in church only three times in my life. And I got to sing this one Sunday evening service for my mother and father. I meant it. It was pretty neat. My Dad was misty eyed. My Mom was misty eyed. Our pastor, Brother Dennis, he was snuffling a bit. Even my son Matt, who I think was 13 at the time, told me. “That was a whole lot better than last time.” That’s not bad from a teenager.

The seventh is my wife’s favorite. If you want to see Darlene’s face light up just start up “Victory in Jesus”. This special lady has put up with me for the last 27 years. . He loved ere I knew him and all my love is due him, he plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood.”

Number 8, is the “The Old Rugged Cross” this was Darlene’s Granddad’s favorite song. Pappy was born in 1885, to put that in perspective Grover Cleveland was president. Pappy went to be with the Lord in 1992. That’s 107 years. He drove a coal delivery truck until he was over 80 years old. The first time I met him, when we shook hands, he turned my hand over and ran his finger across my palm. “That hand never held a shovel.” He said. Not many of us are made of the same kind of stuff today. “I will cling to the old rugged cross, and exchange it someday for a crown.” If it was good enough for those hands, it’s good enough for mine.

Number 9. Most of you will not be familiar with this one. It’s “Visions of Saint John” by John Ness Beck. It starts: “Behold, he cometh with clouds. And every eye shall see Him.” We sang this in high school as a choral contest piece in 1971. I knew more about Revelations from this song than from anything else. Thurman Davis was our choir director, he happened to be a Baptist. Thurman was a big part of my life for the 5 years that I attended Northland High School. He was little bit ornery. But the songs we sang. The testimony he gave us in that music has never left me.

Number 10. The Hallelujah Chorus. For Thurman, for Grandma, for Don Grant, Jan Hauser, Becky Hartley,Carolyn McShann, John Otwell, Susan Cotton, Terry Sapp, Mike Crook, Steve Nance and Steve Brown. The Bible says that the heavenly choir is going to sing, “Worthy is the Lamb”. That may be so, but I believe that we will warm up with this. Maybe “Hallelujah to the Lamb”. But I don’t stop at ten I’ll cut Dr. Parker even shorter on time.

Are we going to sing in heaven? Absolutely. Who is going to be in the choir? Revelations 5:13 says that “every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, an all that is in them" will be the chorus. So you may as well start practicing now. None of this laying back. None of this wondering “Do I sound like …..?” You do, but to God you sound like Pavarotti, and that’s what’s important. What will we sing? Revelations also has some clues to that also.

But one of the songs may go like this:

Before I was saved, I listened to a lot of rock music. Even after I was saved for a couple years I still listened to some rock as long as the lyrics weren't blasphemous.

I now believe that rock music is hazardous to spiritual health, regardless of the lyrics. I haven't read the other threads in this forum yet, but maybe I'll find a place to post a Biblical philosophy of music.

The Lord has put a new song in my heart, I love the old hymns. I'm still learning them(I'm only 4 years old) but there is one that I find myself whistling quite often: How Great Thou Art.

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord
