...get embarrassed.

Mondale Celebrates 90th Birthday with Carter and Others

"'I once told the president one thing I didn't want to happen is I didn't want to be embarassed,' he said. 'In four years, I never was embarassed and I don't think any other VP can make that statement.'"

I guess Mondale never saw Carter's "malaise" speech or the consumerism speech where he lectures the American people like a condescending schoolteacher.

Carter initiated a program to develop synthetic fuels which could have taken us off our dependence on Middle eastern oil. That would have had a huge positive influence on America's economy and security situation. Reagan killed it.

US production of crude oil has mostly freed us from being dependent on Middle Eastern oil.

Not sure what this has to do with Carter's embarrassing, condescending lecture, which is the topic of the OP.

Not a betting man but I’d be willing to guess that should he live to 90, Donald would say the same thing. :Laugh

Have you imbibed of the Kool-Aid from the deep end of the Progressive punchbowl? Exactly how is it that is it that president Regan stopped private companies from bringing energy products to market? Enlighten us. And, if he has, how is has this stopped all activity on that front ever since?

Congress killed the Synthetic Fuel Corp. in 1985, a company that was created with the passage of the Synthetic Fuel bill in November 1979. In 1985 the House was controlled by Democrats; the Senate by Republicans. I don't know why FollowTheWay says Reagan killed the Synthetic Fuel Corp., it was largely market forces that killed it as oil prices had plummeted to under $16 a barrel from $35+ a barrel in 1980.

This was not a private company. It was the quasi-govt. Synthetic Fuel Corp. My brother worked for them as a Corp. Financial Analyst.

So, would that prevent the entire world from exploring the concept? A good idea is a good idea. . . If it were a good idea it would have been a reality by now.

Synthetic fuel was used by the Germans in WWII. The Synthetic Fuel Corporation existed to help startup private firms in improving on the use. There are a number of synthetic fuel approaches. As was mentioned, the price of oil came down and made it less attractive financially. I still believed then and now that we should have subsidized its application because of the strategic benefits (less and less reliance on oil from the Mideast).
