Monitor problem

    I have a hp flat screen monitor that went out about a week after the warranty expired.I believe the switch is bad. The screen goes black within seconds of coming on.
    Should I try to have it fixed or just buy a new one.
    I was told by hp support person that this particular model f1703 meets the criteria for replacement but hp service does not want to talk about that.
    Also I can't find an authorized repair place near me or an address where I can send it to someone.Can anyone help me? Mary Kay

    HP no longer makes that model because of this blackout problem (it is very very common). You are not alone. You can try to press the issue by writing to HP customer service reps and express that their level of quality will make you think again about purchasing HP equipment in the future. Specifically ask for a replacement (all they would have are refurbished models). No guarantees. You can also try looking around and finding a class-action lawsuit to join (as I know there are some out there).

    As far as paying for repairs or a replacement: They will cost you an arm and a leg. It's probably not worth it.

    You might want to pass this off to some geek you know that can solder. Otherwise, this is what the repair person will do and charge you a few hundred bucks for.

    If you decide to replace it, I'll give you a word of advice about where to get a new monitor... WalMart. Yes, WalMart.

    I am currently using a Balance 19" LCD that I gave just under $300 for. Why is that so great? If it has a dead pixel, I return it for a new one. No RMA involved.

    You didn't say if you had tried another monitor on the computer. There are problems in a computer that could also cause blackness.

    If you decide to throw it out, consider giving it to someone that needs one and tthat might be able to fix it. It sounds like a very easy fix for someone with a soldering iron and a screw driver.
