is there any of you geeks here who can tell me precisely how to diagnose a monitor that flickers shut and on again evey so often ?
do I need a gauge to see if it's got enough power or what ?
whatever you say, PLEASE, do not tell me I need a new one, please, please...unless you necessarily have to say so.
    thanks.

the next time it does its thing give the top or side a whack and see if it comes back. Things that come and go are usually a loose connection of some sort.

You should probably check your power plug on both ends and the video line where it plugs into the computer.

If those are okay then probably inside the monitor. If vibration causes it to act up or come back to life I'd guess it needs help, but the cost of repair would be about the same as a new one I'd guess these days unless you have an electronic tech for a friend [IMG]

The tube type are pretty cheap right now, but the flat screens are fairly cheap as well for what they used to be.

Would have to be a real good friend to stick a screwdriver into the back of a monitor. Unless you know what your doing you can get hurt in there. Like exscentric said, the cost of repair might be about the cost of a new monitor, depending on the size and what the actual problem is. If it is an intermittent problem, I would start looking for a good deal and saving up for the monitor you really want. Monitor problems are like cavities, they only get bigger. ;)

If you have to buy a new one, check WalMart. Yes, WalMart. I bought mine there... a 19" LCD for less than $300. While I haven't seen the same brand as mine of late (Balance), they still carry several different ones, ranging from 15" to 19" (and cheaper than what I gave for mine back in May).

Plus, if it dies, or has a dead pixel of three, you can just take it right back and exchange it! ;)

Thanks, y'all. I'll start with the whack, and check out Wal-Mart next payday (provided the mrs don't ask me how much I have first). ;)

A single whack migh be okay as a diagnostic tool, but I certainly wouldn't use that as a way of making the monitor come on again. If your monitor has a loose connection, repeated whacks could make the connection become completely detached.
