Montana moves to reject Real ID law

It would be nice to see Texas get on the train, but I think our DLs have been Real ID compliant for about 10 years now... well, I guess I haven't had to prove residency yet.

 

It's surprising to me how many places won't accept a US Passport as ID.

 

IDentity theft is a growing problem.
Well, it is a problem to those 1.2% of the U.S. population that
had their identity stolen in 2006.

Oklahoma has had a law since about 1998 that prohibits
the display of one's Social Security Number (SSN) on
the Driver's License. In 2005 I even got an identification
card from Oklahoma for my Grandchildren (so I could
take them across State Lines) - no SSN on the ID card.

The 9-11 bombers that left Boston's airport left dozens
of false identities in their parked cars. Each state should make
laws making a felony for the carrying or possession
of false identities.

I've been part of two different identity thefts.

My first wife's SSN was used on a bank account by some
other person who had an account in the same bank.
My first wife couldn't write checks around town until the
matter was cleared (that was back before check cards).

When I did my first free check of the three major
credit rating firms, I found for 11 months Social Security had
considered me being dead. (No wonder I couldn't get any more
credit ) I had to have two forms of picture ID and two witnesses
that said I looked like the person on the IDs to get my
Social Security number (SSN) back. When you 'die' your
SSN is public property and your data is sold on the open market.
(And BTW, it is important
to get your free check of the three major
credit reporting compangies report on you.
I check one every four months - each year that makes all
three done yet I never go more than four months without
checking at least one.)

(BTW, having had my first wife die I found out that
people with low morals will send the surviving spouse
messages saying that their spouse did this or commited that
money or whatever -- preying on the grieving spouse -- bad form.)

You might be surprised to see just how low some people will go. I had a co-worker several years ago who told me about his con-artist brother. His brother would go through the obituaries and locate someone to scam. He would then take a large cheap bible and print the dead man's name on it. He would go over to their house and tell the widow that her husband had ordered this bible some weeks back and he was delivering it, acting like he did not know that the man was dead. Most of the time the widow would purchase the bible, at an exorbitant price, thinking it was one of the last things her beloved husband had done.

If he really did this, he stole the idea from Joe David Brown's novel Addie Pray, which was made into the 1973 movie Paper Moon. It's the exact scam that Moses 'Long Boy' Pray (played by Ryan O'Neal in the movie) is using at the beginning of the story.

 

I hope you are correct and it is just fiction. I have never seen the movie "Paper Moon" so I was not aware of this story.
