I use many Moody materials and have a couple of friends who went there.

My experiences with Moody have been nothing but positive but I can't imagine that they'd be very popular here on BaptistBord.

What's wrong with Moody? Heretics? Liberal?
    Allow NIV's on campus?

I plan on going to Moody Bible Institute to get a Pastoral studies w/ pre-sem emphesis major. No they are not heretics, you can read there statement of faith at

    MBI Doctrinal Statement

And as far as I know they allow the use of the Bible. I would be worried it they didn't.

I cannot imagine any of the independent fundamental baptists on the BB endorsing Moody.

By 1970 (my last contact with them personally) they were so new evangelical that my fundamentalist crowd would not have any association with them.

The church in which I was Associate Pastor/Interim right out of seminary (1970ish) called a Senior Pastor who was an older Moody Grad. He requested we include Moody on our annual trips for jr/srs to visit Christian colleges. (Did TTU, BJU, Piedmont one spring and Maranatha, Pillsbury and now Moody the other).

Now folks, this is 30 years ago but as we walked the quad and thru the dorms and toured the facilities, our teens saw students with no personal dress or appearance standards, beer cans piled in the windows, rock music, posters on walls that were pure pornography. We could not get out of that environment fast enough.

Now we were pretty legalistic (I've grown a lot since then). But our kids were much more "at home" in the typical ifb college environment than at Moody.

Anybody have more recent report? Know that the Pastor at Moody is a great reformed preacher and maybe . . . Don't want to spread an "evil report", so I'm wide open to a newer viewpoint!

It is beyond me how you got that impression of MBI. My report of them? Well adults tell me that they are one of the best interdenominational bible schools in the world. I know that MBI and Dallas Theological have some connection.

There rules are stricter then most schools. PDA (Public Display of Affection) is a no-no. Dress code MUST be collared shirt and tie until after 5pm. You must adhere to the standards of the college or you will be expelled. I have a couple of friends who just graduated there. It is not a place you goof of in. It sounds as if you are describing MSU more than MBI. They are a great school. Especially for those who want a challange and not just to go to school with a few thousand other people that think the same as you do (as far as religious beliefs are concerned).

The times I have visited MBI I have been very impressed by the students and faculty I have met. I am really surprised by Dr. Bob's impression.

I have visited Moody ten years ago, and found nothing what vaguely resembled a beer can..... [IMG] My friend, who graduated from there and is now living in Chicago, and I were admitted after hours and escorted along the campus. We even had a chance of looking at the hallowed site of the Moody exhibition, the radio station, and walked along the underground hallways. There were a lot of young people around, but all properly dressed and courteous. To me it looked like a typical Christian campus.

From the school we went over to the Moody Church. Met some folks there as well, there was choir practice at the time. Enjoyed the singing. The only drawback was, upon our leaving the premises, that outside on the street there was such a wind! No wonder it is called the windy city. ;)

My contact was back in the early 70's when life was different . . .

PLEASE do not take my words as a blanket condemnation of the campus today. I am sorry I conveyed it so poorly.

My concern with Moody would be that it wouldn't introduce a student to the breadth of Christian theology but would instead only teach them the slice that is ultra-right-wing, fundamentalist, and evangelical.

And my fear, Joshua, is that they would teach them just the opposite, or at least to cooperate with liberals who disguise themselves as Baptists. That would be disappointing.

But MBI is "evangelical" or at least "new evangelical". On the theological spectrum, that would put them a whole lot closer to my position that yours.!

What is amazing about Moody, and one of the reasons I really want to get in there, is that they do not restrict enrollment to Baptists. It is open to almost all non-Catholic Christians. All you have to do is agree to hold to their statement of faith which is similiar to the NEA statement of faith.

Why do I find this so great? Because instead of being in a college where everyone agrees with me theologically, I am in a college where my beliefs and theology will be challenged everyday and I will be forced to really know what I am talking about and be able to back up what I say.

(well besides that- there is no tuition- can't beat that  )

This is off the topic slightly, but if you get a chance to listen to messages from Moody's Founders' Week... wow, good stuff [IMG]
