A kid in Indiana, on his way to school, puts his hands inside his pockets and discovers he forgot to remove his swiss army knife.

Upon arriving at school, he goes directly to the office, and turns the knife in, explaining that he brought it by mistake.

He is being recommended for expulsion. SOURCE

So, the kid does the right thing, the right way, and will probably receive an incredibly harsh punishment--the same punishment he would get for intentionally bringing a knife--with malicious intent!

Well, we know where a few idiots reside. They're running some of the Warren Township, Indiana schools.

This re-iterates points I've made before:
    (1) Many school officials are completely incapable of making common-sense judgements based on the facts.
    (2) "Zero-tolerance" approaches are in place so that dummies like this don't have to resort to using any gray matter.

I hope they get so many calls and emails that their system completely crashes.

    Sheesh.

My daughter was suspended for a week, for the exact same thing. I supported the school's decision. Her bringing the knife to school, even if it was a mistake, was a violation of school's rules, and I like seeing rules enforced.

Wow, that is quite the story. I agree with a lot of what rbell says. I guess I can see the suspension since that was breaking the rules, but expulsion is way too much for a boy doing the right thing.

He hasn't been expelled. Let's see if he is before we freak out. The school's rules say one year for a firearm. I kinda doubt he's going to be expelled.

I hope they don't expell him...

But, I don't see a lot of hope in this Zero Tolerance Idocy....

Can a boy really be a boy without a pocket knife?

    Aw come on now...

    It isn't the knife...

Except for slashing I can kill you just as easily with a standard #2 pencil! Probably easier...

    Mike Sr.

I feel the same way about a girl being expelled because she forgot to take her Midol out of her purse...

But, it's a **drug**!!! And she gets the same punishment as someone selling drugs on campus...

Zero Tolerance is just another name for total lunacy!

And, leveling the playing field so that even the best of kids are as bad as the worst...

Why should our children even try to behave... If you're going to be expelled anyway...

Might as well have some real fun getting expelled...

Why should they study hard if the ones that don't try at all are going to get passed anyway?

Sorry, but, there are some real burnt out light bulbs in the education system...

Most of them also several bricks short of a full load!

The boy was responsable for his actions, and he did not check and leave the knife at home, and broke the rules.

So he should be expelled, donna? Come now, you have better judgement than that. Sure, he should be punished...but you want to give him the SAME penalty you would give a kid who sliced or assaulted another?

We have a teacher in our church who was punched in the jaw by a student. That kid got 5 days. You're telling me this is more serious than that?

I disagree, donnA. There should not be a one-size fits all penalty. The fact that he realized he had made a MISTAKE and did something about it immediately should, in my opinion, mean that he gets, at the maximum, a day or two in lunch detention.

Karen (who sometimes runs detention as a public school sub)

Sounds like he tried not to break the rules by turning it in.

The school is teaching him not to trust authorities, to keep his mouth shut and "don't get caught" - probably lessons worth learning in this world. Excessive punishment does more harm than good in my experience.

Yep, the worst thing you can do is punish someone for doing the right thing. Think of the lesson that will teach.

    And kids learn quickly.

    "Don't let me catch you..."

    "Don't worry, you won't."

I think it's important to remember there is such a thing as a stupid rule.

It's important to take responsibility when you make a mistake. And he hasn't been expelled, folks.

If this was your son, would you feel the same way?

I, for one. rejoice that the safety of the group trumps the feelings of one.

    And, he HASN'T been expelled.

Somebody check me for a fever: I'm with Daisy and Galatian and against my Bro. Curtis on this one. I don't think he should be suspended either. He made a mistake, realized it, went STRAIGHT to the office on arrival to turn his knife in and is BUSTED for ten days??? That's insanity. He didn't just "bring the knife to school", he brought it TO THE OFFICE and TURNED IT IN. He did the RIGHT THING.

If there was a legitimate threat here I would be right with you. But the kid realized his mistake and turned it in as soon as he got there. If this were my son I would be extremely proud of him for realizing his mistake and turning it in. We all make mistakes. It was not like he planned to bring the knife to school.

If he is expelled, what will your reaction be?

Well, I would vehemently disagree. I do agree with the suspension.

When he is expelled, I'll join all the voices of outrage.
