SALT LAKE CITY, April 7 (UPI) -- Mormon patriarch Eldred G. Smith, who served under nine Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints presidents, has died in Utah, the church said. He was 106.

The Salt Lake Tribune said Smith, who passed away at his home in Salt Lake City Thursday, was the oldest and longest-serving Mormon general authority.

Smith was a great-great-grandson of Hyrum Smith, the elder brother of the church's founder, Joseph Smith.

"Though I didn't know him personally, Eldred Smith embodied the Mormon patriarchal ideal -- that we are connected in our families going back through time -- and brought it into the 20th century," historian Richard Bushman, an ordained LDS patriarch, said. "No one spoke as long and as effectively about Joseph Smith as Patriarch Smith. His passing will be a loss."

Smith was active in the church's administration until shortly before his death, the Tribune said.

"The church lost a valued friend and respected leader with the passing of Patriarch Eldred G. Smith," the LDS Church said in a statement. "He was a man who lived a Christ-centered life as he faithfully served as patriarch to the church. We pray for the Lord's blessing to be upon his family at this tender time."

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Elder Eldred G. Smith, the oldest Mormon Church general authority and oldest known Utahn, has died at the age of 106.

Smith, who was born in Lehi, died Thursday night.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement praising him as a "valued friend" and "respected leader."

During his 32 years as church patriarch, he traveled to every continent and gave more than 18,000 blessings. He had been an emeritus church patriarch since 1979.

Provo's Daily Herald reports he had five children, 24 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren as of a year ago.

KSL reports he was the most long-lived general authority in the church's history. Smith celebrated his 106th birthday on Jan. 9.

106. And still died entrenched in this wicked Mormon belief system. I pray that God breaks the yoke of this wickedness that is running through his family and so many others;that the scales of deceit be removed and that the masses finally see the wickedness of Mormonism for what it is.

The Tragedy Of The Lost

In my opinion...this man lived to be 106 simply because God was merciful to give him every chance to repent and turn to the true Gospel before he finally took him out of this world. In any case, he left this world in the same condition as any other lost man....WITHOUT EXCUSE before a Just and Holy Triune God. I'm absolutely sure...on the authority of God's Word, that he now knows that his false religion was bogus and wicked...no matter what kind of "pious" or "nice" outward appearance it has. Very sad.

We don't know that.

We can hope that he did before his time on earth ended. Just as the thief on the cross did when he joined our Saviour, in paradise, that very day.
