    Grace/peace y'all...

In your personal opinion, what part of the worship service could, under no circumstances, be dispensed with?

Wish you'd let me pick two -- sermon and prayer... [IMG]

Of the choices given, only preaching can be effectively done in a corperate service. Or as one preacher says "Let's stop singing, we'll be doing that for an eternity in Heaven. Let's get to preaching!" Suffice to say I think the brother needs a bucket to carry a tune, but his point is well taken. Singing and prayer are not the bread of life the Word is, today we do not balance this out in our services.

Sermons are very important; but a sermon that ain't based on scripture ain't worth a flip.

I'm a little surprised at myself, but my vote is for the reading of scripture.

I would have to say the congregational singing. The service seems too focused on preaching and not on worshiping. I'd rather sing more t han have a preacher preach. The purpose, one of the main purposes, of going to church and participating in the service is to worship God. You are supposed to be reading your Bible daily, which would be your spiritual food, but one of the only times that you get together to fellowship is church. Use that time to worship, not to have a preacher preach for what seems like hours on end.

Actually, I don't think any of the answers suffice.

When we enter the Lord's house we are their to worship Him. And that is the most important thing we can do. To have our hearts and minds set on things above as a body of believers. I'll grant you the sermon (btw- a homily is a shortened sermon, that is why it is not in the Baptist vocabulary), music (form of worship), prayer, and communion are all essential. But all of those elements are part of worshipping our Lord. If we are not doing that, we mine as well pack up and go home.

    Teresa,

Since I go to your church I know that half of the service is dedicated to singing and the other half dedicated to being in the Word and learning. If the pastor is not going to lead his flock during the service, when is he going to?

Wasn't talking about our church. I was referring to those churches who think it's neccessary to fit singing in so they can say that the congregation took part in the act of worship. I think that our church does a good job of balancing the congregational worshipping and the leading of the pastor in an applicating sermon. Some churches I've been to though, seem to think that all there is to a worship service is the pastor preaching the majority of the time.

LoL. I'd love for some Baptists to experience an African American church I've been to (non-demon, but very baptistic). You get a balance of just about everything. Your Sunday starts at 5am with prayer and ends at around 8pm with the close of the evening service. There is about a four hour block in the afternoon to rest and eat.

8o) Similar to the Messianics---or my syna-
gogue, anyway. Ours starts at 10:30 a.m. and
ends an hour or so after sundown.

By the way--I attended a local Russian church
a while back, and they had no less than 6 or
more sermons in a single service. And they
    weren't homilies! 8oD

My apologies . . . but I knew I'd forget something. (No one ever comes up for the invitation at my current church, so I forget it's even there.) :(

I'll grant you that, Brother A., but my search is for which mode of worship folks think is most essential. I used to believe that true worship was something that was done apart from the physical actions of the service. I tortured myself for a long time to get a feeling in my gut of "true worship." What a waste of time. Now I understand that even my drive to church is an act of worship, since by doing it, I am setting God above all things in my life.

Frankly though, I wouldn't vote in my stupid poll either. :D

I was thrown off by the theme of the thread. It asked about the most important part of a worship service.

That would, then, by implication be worship, right?

What parts of our typical service, then, are worship?</font>
    • Offering</font>
    • Hymns</font>
    • Prayer</font>
. Most certainly NOT our preaching or listening to a performance (or psychologically manipulating the audience into a response).
We need to think this through.

should we go back to the dark ages the topic of this thread may well be very applicable. for example, if we only have an hour for the service, i think most of it should be spent with the delivery of God's word.

at our modern times, now that Satan is destroying the Church from within after his failure from destroying it from outside forces, pastors must discern which parts of the service must be included and which must not, depending on the church situation.

for example, if a church is still small and it is a growing atmosphere when someone who sings at the front is filled with criticisms afterwards instead of "contributing to the worship," then the pastor may well cancel special numbers or the choir for some time.

This is one of the more interesting polls for me. It really demonstrates the how different religious cultures and experiences come to worship.

At my reading I was not surprized to see:

35% Sermon. Protestant ministers are most commonly judged by their preaching ability. A service is good or bad, depending on the sermon.

5% Scripture. Was lower than I expected since Baptists stress scripture so much. Apparently it is much more important what the pastor believes the scriptures say to us, than what the scripture says all by itself. Naturally we all relate to story and parable. They are easier to remember.

20% Lord's Supper. Must be where the few Catholics hang out. However even when I was CoC, the Lords Supper was very important to me. If this were on a Catholic Board, I think you would see at least 80% in the Lord's Supper section.

Velly interesting. Thanks for the poll.
    Grace and peace,
    Uncle Ray
