Just a fun topic here. What one book, other than the Bible, has had the biggest impact on your spiritual life and why?

Early on in my Chirstian life I picked up a modern version of "Pilgrim's Progress".

Simple message but profoundly effective at pointing a new Christian's life toward a heavenly goal.

Hendricksen publisher's version of Spurgeon's Morning and Evening (NIV based). His devotions are pure gold. Alistar Begg has revised this with the ESV, and I am frothing at the mouth to get a copy.

My Christian life was fairly shallow until, as a Bible college student, I read two books about slain missionary Jim Elliot: Through Gates of Splendor and Shadow of the Almighty , both by his widow, Elisabeth Elliot.

Jim's no-holds-barred enthusiasm for the Lord and extreme dedication to His cause, stirred me and inspired me to dedicate my own life more fully to Christ.

    I highly recommend both books.

Two books I've read recently have greatly influenced me and have been a source of conviction: The Treasure Principle (stewardship) and The Purity Principle (morality), both written by Randy Alcorn.

He doesn't pull any punches or water down his message in the least.

The Genesis Record by Henry Morris.

I liked it because it gave me much help in understanding the fossil record and many other aspects about the earth I didn't know. Plus what I was able to share with others has helped them to share their faith.

There are many of them, but two that I've read in the last few years have been very helpful:

"The Divine Conspiracy" by Dallas Willard

    and

    "Hearing God" by Dallas Willard

Can I share FOUR that were most influential at various periods of time?

"Things to Come" by J. Dwight Pentecost was most influential during my teen years as I wrestled OUT of a mid-trib position.

"The Sovereignty of God" by A.W. Pink helped shape my theology in college and grad school.

"Grace Awakening" by Chuck Swindoll after many years battling legalism in the pastoral ministry.

"12 Steps for Recovering Pharisees" needed every day. I keep falling back to step one day after day. I am GOOD at being a Pharisee . .

    Would recommend any/all of these.

There have been four books that have really precipitated a "sea change" in my spiritual life:
    </font>
    • Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis showed me that there is a rational basis for faith (something which simply had not occurred to me in around 1989-90).</font>
    • The Transforming Vision by Richard Middleton and Brian Walsh, and The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind by Mark A. Noll, both of which I read in 1995, together convinced me that Christianity was not merely a "spiritual" thing but a comprehensive way of life that touches on all aspects of existence.</font>
    • The sermons of Charles Spurgeon were instrumental in "converting" me from an evangelical Arminian type to Calvinism in 1998.</font>
