    Question for Catholics:

If you could recommend just one book that you would want a Protestant to read with the intention of conversion (not including the Bible or the Cathecism) which one would it be?

    For the Protestant:

Same question. Which book would you recommend to a Catholic with the intention of conversion? ( not including Bible or Cofessions of Faith.)

Oh, those are excellant choices! [IMG]

    I would add:

    JESUS, PETER & THE KEYS
By Scott Butler, Norman Dahlgren, and
    David Hess, ISBN: 1-882972-54-6

This book totally and completely destroys all Protestant arguments against the Catholic interpretation of Matthew 16:18-19, in my humble opinion, of course...

#1 book that has influenced me outside the Bible the last 5 years is The Lambs Supper. Scott Hahn.

Escatoly is big these days with Mr. Jenkins and Lahaye and their 50 million dollar book deals. Speculation of the book of revaltions is rampant. This book puts it in the proper light.

A fun read would be "AntiCatholicism: The Last Acceptable Prejudice" by Dr. Phillip Jenkins. [IMG]

As for an all-encompassing Catholic book, I can't think of one I've read off hand, but Hail, Holy Queen by Scott Hahn and The Lamb's Supper really got me thinking.

    God bless you all,

    Grant

Remember now, you have a Protestant or a Catholic just a hairs breadth away from conversion.
What is that one book that you feel will bring him/her over?

I really thought the Hahn book, "The Lamb's Supper" was great....definately a must read to understand more about the Mass and Revelation.

Also have you read the book Hahn wrote on Mary? Another great read!

'Far from Rome, Near to God'

The testimonies of fifty converted RC priests.
Edited by Richard Bennett and Martin Buckingham.

Available from The Banner of Truth Trust.

Not as offensive as the title might suggest. Here's a short exert:

"What Paul said about his fellow Jews I say about my dearly loved Roman Catholic brothers: my hearts desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. I can tetify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is based in their church tradition rather than in the word of God. If you understand the devotion and agony that some of our brothers and sisters in the Philippines and South America have put into their religion, you may understand my hearts cry 'Lord, give us compassion to understand the pain and torment of the search our brothers and sisters have made to please you. In understanding pain inside the Roman Catholic hearts, we will have the desire to show them the good news of Christ's finished work on the cross.'"

(from the testimony of former RC priest Richard Bennett)

    God Bless

    Enda

Dang, Carson, that was my choice! A reviewer on Amazon.com says it is like a love poem to the Catholic Church, and I concur.

How about any of the three "Surprised By Truth" volumes, each with about 10-15 stories of people (usually but not always Christians) coming into the Church.

It's not a book, but I also have to mention "No Price Too High," a video by Alex Jones. He was a Pentecostal Pastor who's search for truth led him to the Catholic Church (No Lord, not there!). What makes his journey so interesting is that he brought along about 1/3 of his congregation into the Church.

'Far from Rome, Near to God'

I've read this one (a Catholic girl friend of mine agreed to read it for her boyfriend, who attends BJU; we sent him Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic by David Currie - he's actually going to be my roommate next year!).

It's chalk full of misrepresentations of the Catholic faith, FYI. I spent a couple of hours underlining, circling, and writing in the margins - pointing out the errors it contains. However, most of the stories don't address doctrinal issues; they're laden with "personal testimony".

Dang, Carson, that was my choice!

Thomas Howard is the C.S. Lewis of our day. He's a real treat to read, and his conversion - at the time - was a shocker to the Evangelical world. I have an extra copy of his conversion story, Lead, Kindly Light, which I'll mail to the first non-Catholic who emails me their mailing address at carson@boerne.com.

How about any of the three "Surprised By Truth"

The first volume is the best.

</font>[/QUOTE]Yep, read em both. I also have his latest about the trinity and the family (can't recall the name) but haven't gotten started on it yet. I heard him speak on it and it sounds very good.

Anybody notice anything funny about this thread. I was expecting it from the start and so far it holds true for the most part. We are the salt of the earth.

'Knowing God" by J.I. Packer. That might even convert some Protestants to Evangelicalism.

Carson, I'm sure you are not suggesting that these 50 ex-priests are deliberately misrepresenting the catholic faith.

They are obviously telling their own personal stories, each having left the Church because of doctrinal issues. Possibly some of them had a poor understanding of certain doctrines, but that makes the book all the more interesting. Doesn't it worry you that these priests appear to have had little or no knowledge of the Bible before their conversions.

I'm a converted catholic myself and one of the things that affected me most was that when I discussed my situation with a priest, (prior to conversion) he had no answers for me, and worse still he couldn't give me any real reason why I shouldn't leave the RC church.

Not long ago I went to a local Monastary to witness to the monks there. I attempted to discuss the Word of God with an old monk I met walking in the grounds. He hadn't a clue what I was talking about, he obviously didn't read the Bible.

I find it incredible that these men, having studied many years in various seminaries seem to know nothing about Scripture. And these are the 'guardians' of the catholic souls. :(

Of course this book is full of testimonies, that is what it is all about. When I read the book I could see what the Lord had done in the lives of these men since they had begun to earnestly seek Him. Many of these men now travel the world over seeking to bring the Good News to the catholic people. Richard Bennett and Frank Eberhart have both been in Ireland recently. The Lord is now using these men greatly, to the Salvation of many souls.

I just hope you will read the book again without thinking that these men set out to lie and decieve. If you feel that they were poorly taught you have to ask yourself why.

    God Bless

    Enda

    Enda,
I know exactly what you are saying. I have talked to literally hundreds of Roman Catholics about the true gospel and have never ran into any that knew very much about their faith until I came to this board. That obviously led me to the conclusion that a great majority of the Catholics on this board are e-pologists who have a ministry to throw a monkey wrench into any effort to show what a false religion Catholicism is. These are a very small percentage of Roman Catholics as any Baptist will tell you who has done any door to door evangelism. To listen to them you would think that they were the rule rather than the exception. I wonder how many of the RCs that post are seminary students? Most of us Baptists are ordinary laymen with a real job who just love God's Word and have a concern, love and passion for the TRUTH. BTW I know Frank Eberhart personally.
