Our church is trying to do something special for mother days, but we need ideas. Does anybody have any suggestions for what the men can do?

A church I belonged to for Mothers Day shot videos of kids saying why they loved their mothers, without the mothers knowing it. Then in the service on Mothers Day they played the clips. It was very moving. Not sure it was appropriate for worship service though.

Take over the nurseries and Sunday schools and let the women get a break. Have a meal afterwards, prepared by the guys or at least brought in, and have the men do all the set up and clean up.

Don't forget about the women who mother children...the ones who have lost their own or can't have any and take pleasure in sharing their mommy instincts with children at the church or in their workplace.

And for the love of everything decent, don't hold that stupid "mother of the year" award where the person who gets it is always the one with a lot of tithes or who "looks" like they have a model family. It's very insulting to, well, almost everyone else.

Yes, please don't have a "mother of the year" award. It winds up being a popularity contest and just causes hard feelings.

We've tried different things from bookmarkers to flower baskets and even little corsages. This is what worked best and what we do yearly now: on the Saturday before Mother's Day, dh and I go to a local nursery and get small pots (4 inches square) of individual flowers or plants. We get a wide variety, from herbs to flowers to veggie plants. These cost a couple of bucks each, and the nursery gives us a discount for buying a certain number. Then we put these on the communion table for everyone to look at during morning worship. Afterwards, all the LADIES may come up and get one. Some ladies get Gerbera dasies or impatiens or ivy, while other of us practical gals can choose a tomato start or some basil or chives. I say ladies, because not all ladies are mothers and that can be very painful for some. So, we invite all women over the age of 18, I think, to come get a flower.

One warning, though, is to let the older gals go first. Otherwise, some young chick might get her hand smacked reaching for the last geranium!

We call it Mothering Sunday in England and simply treat the ladies with obvious respect and flowers during the service.

    Cheers,
