Msg

Won't touch the stuff with a 10 foot pole. If we get a prepackaged something and it's in it, I take it school to see who will take it. That doesn't happen often. I read ingredients carefully.

 

I don't know what is in it but if it is in gravy I probably eat it.


Typical southern lunch:

Country Fried Steak - extra gravy
Mashed potatoes- extra gravy
Corn bread - Plenty of butter (real butter not none of this "I can't believe its not butter" butter)
Biscuits- extra gravy

 

Rev - you found one of my few food weaknesses. Butter. I don't eat any dairy, but I can't give up butter.

I doubt msg is in gravy - certainly not homemade, but it might be if it's from a jar.

Gravy is actually one of the seven basic food groups south of the Mason-Dixon Line and Ohio River, even.

(My 'Yankee' bride grimaces each time I remind her of this, although after 10 years she is finally starting to see the light - considering I make it in the roast and vegetables, etc., and she actually now likes it with Pan-fried country steak, as well as a little turkey or chicken gravy, and loves creamed chip beef on toast, although I have a hard time with the sausage 'milk' gravy! :laugh: BTW, one of the best Southern breakfast is scrambled eggs, home fries, and biscuits with fried country ham and 'red-eye' gravy! And pan-fried steak is also complemented well with 'red-eye' gravy and biscuits, too!)
But why would anyone want to put butter on cornbread without syrup, honey or molasses?

Gravy from a jar?? That ain't gravy. If isn't made in a frying pan, it isn't gravy!!

 

It needs to be made with a sausage or bacon base and then with flour and milk. Anything else is ....well not gravy.

 

I think I read that somewhere, very recently, but do not recall exactly where.

However, I believe this to be just one more unproved assertion against MSG, which has never affected me, although I don't use it when cooking (Hang on! I forgot whether or not I have turned off the stove!

But it does bring out the flavor, so I just sprinkle on a little anyway, since I believe it to be an unproven assertion that one's memory may be affected, and it has never affected me in any manner. I do have to cut this post short, and go check to see if I turned off the stove, in a sec.

I think I did read very recently read very recently somewhere that MSG may cause memory be the cause of memory issues, but I believe that is a totally unproven assert....

I know that silly, but they do sell it.

I don't touch stuff in jars myself. Homemade is ALWAYS the best - NO MSG for sure that way (besides, it has flavor!)

 

Why is it that what I fixed for dinner seems woefully inadequate now . . .

Nothing fried, and no butter or gravy. DRAT, how much time until everyone gets home? mmmmm

 

We are having pan fried pork chops and buttered corn. Of course this is just to add flavor to my extra gravy.:laugh:

 

You've probably still got enough time to do it right, and fix the gravy! :thumbsup:

I gotta' go with SBC Preacher, and to a lesser extent, Revmitchell on this one, although milk and flour would really mess-up 'red-eye' gravy.
