A month or so ago I announced that I was reading a few books and here is my review of them.
The Second Coming- John MacArthur hits a homerun with this one. He proves right from the Bible very craftily and carefully while anything other than the premillennialist, pretribulationist, dispensationalist interpretation does not flow naturally from the scriptures. This was somewhat of a technical read for the undergraduate/laymen level reader, but Dwight Pentecost, Feinberg, Walvoord, and others are far more technical in their books. The only weakness of this book is its lack of application. The application that MacArthur does give is not very memorable and David Jeremiah does a much better job in his book in this area.
Until Christ Returns-This book is filled with application and insight from the Olivet Discourse. Its not as detailed oriented or academic as John MacArthur's version "The Second Coming" however its far more application based which was probably the goal David Jeremiah had when he wrote this book. Whats the point of knowing every nitty detail of everything when we miss the entire theme of the Discourse? Jeremiah makes a strong case for working to earn rewards in Heaven until Christ returns. Evangelism is so vitally important and a strong case is made in this book to do evangelism. Also edifying and encouraging the saints is emphasized as well as living a righteous and holy life until Christ returns. For a more detailed read on the theme of "Holiness" get the book "set apart" by Kent Hughes. Overall a good work of which I gladly applaud David Jeremiah. Once again for more academic details on the discourse read John MacArthur's book "The Second Coming."
The King is coming- I have been reading this book along with Until Christ Returns by David Jeremiah, & The Second Coming by John MacArthur. Those books are based on the Olivet Discourse while this book is more on the theme of Christ returning. This book was a decent read but some issues I have are that the book lacks a topical & scripture index as most or all of Lutzers book do, and I kinda felt the writing style jumped around too much and did not fully explain the text as perhaps this book needed better editors. For more detail on the second coming & the book of Revelation I would recommend MacArthur's "The Second Coming Book", and for more application taken from the Olivet Discourse and how to live today as we await the return of Christ I would recommend David Jeremiah's "Until Christ Returns" book.
So my recommendation is to purchase The second Coming and Until Christ returns. Both books are very good and should be read over and over again.
