Here's an illustration to help understand that we are never saved by obedience.

Salvation is as though Jesus loaded me on to his truck and is chauffeuring me to heaven. But I spend lots of time walking and running on the treadmill in the back of the truck. Many times just focussing on how well I can perform and maintain my health.

Of course this is all symbolic. The truck = the New Birth. The treadmill = exercising holiness in daily life. Because the New Birth makes me hunger and thirst after righteousness.

So my works do not save, but they form the likeness of Christ in me as I workout every day motivated by love.
