Suppose someone asks you how much you pay for rent, what prescriptions you are on, who your financial adviser, when are you going to have kids, get married or any other personal question.

    How do you answer.

    Do you
    A) give a smart aleck response
    B) say MYOB
    C) change the subject
    D) other answer

One advice columnist suggests responding with, "Why do you want to know?"

Another suggests saying, "Is this a 'want to know' or 'need to know' question?" (Of course, the person might say "I want to know").

I haven't used either of these yet.

    I have said,
    "That's pretty personal"
or "I'm sorry, but I don't answer that question"
or "My policy is to discuss that only with family"

Questions I do not like being asked and usually will not answer:

    1. How old are you? (I'm appalled people ask this of adult women - I was raised to never ask a woman her age). I never give my age although I am asked this fairly often, even by people who don't know me well.

    2. Do you color your hair?

    3. How long were you married? (I was divorced before being saved - I usually answer this by saying, "several years")

I also think changing the subject is a good tact.

I don't mind the questions, but I am very good at reversing the question.

The age question shouldn't trouble a woman or a man, depending on who is asking and why? The questionner may just want to place the other in an age category for historical experience reasons.....the only reason I even care about age.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I've said before that what they asked was way too personal a question to adults who ask what they don't need to know.

Kids don't understand why they can't know everything about me (and I mean everything!).

Recently someone (an old friend who I hadn't seen in a while) asked a personal question and I might have told her more (might not have either), but I was very short on time so I just answered yes and left the rest hanging.

I encountered this the other day when I tried to make a purchase. Before the cashier rang me up, she wanted to know my phone number, address, and email address. I told her I don't give info like that for a simple cash purchase, and she got mad. She informed me that they needed to "find" me so they could give me
information about sales and coupons. I smiled, nodded, and said, "no thanks."

Some of my family members don't have this info, why on earth would I give it to a stranger?

As for the op's question, usually I raise my eyebrows and say, "I'm not going to tell you THAT! or "That is a CIA classified secret. Sorry, I can't blab it." If I'm feeling really snippy, I'll say, "You go first!"

I would have told her that's exactly why she can't have it. If I need something from their store I will stop by. Promise...

I'm not ashamed of my age! I don't use credit, so no one needs to know the other things. Surely age can only be a personal interest thing. Maybe someone wants to give me a hand out!

Why are women so defensive about their age?

    Cheers,

    Jim

If someone asks something much too personal, I usually ask them "why would you possibly need to know that?", or "Why would you ask that?". You want to see someone get uncomfortable and stammer for an answer, try it. They cannot give a good answer because there isn't one, but they don't want to say they were just nosey.
