Nancy Reagan Tells Webb Not To Use Video Of Her Husband In Latest Ad

    Sep 9, 2006 09:17 AM

Nancy Reagan has ordered Democratic Senate candidate Jim Webb, a former Reagan White House military aide, NOT to use video of her husband praising Webb in an upcoming campaign ad.

A three-paragraph letter from the former first lady's office says the use of footage of President Reagan is "neither authorized nor appropriate."

An ad Webb intends to begin televising Monday features Reagan praising Webb, then an assistant secretary of defense, during the 1985 U.S. Naval Academy commencement ceremony.

On the video Reagan says, "James' gallantry as a Marine in Vietnam won him the Navy Cross and other decorations."

Webb was NOT immediately available for comment.

Former Attorney General Edwin Meese was a Reagan adviser. He calls the ad, "improper, unethical and very possibly illegal."

Webb is running against George Allen in his campaign for Virginia Senate.

This may be why Nancy objects:

    EXCERPT

After 10 months, Jim Webb resigned as Reagan's Navy Secretary. Webb told the New York Times that he could not "live inside the [Reagan] administration."

In 1988, Jim Webb gave a speech at the National Press Club in which he broke ranks with the Reagan Administration on its very successful policy of dealing with the Soviet Union. While the Reagan administration was pursuing an arms buildup to force the Soviet hand, Webb was out demanding cuts in American military strength in Europe.

Also in 1988, Jim Webb went on record opposing President Reagan's Persian Gulf policy. On April 24, 1988, in the Albany Times Union, Webb wrote an opinion piece highly critical of President Reagan. Webb called the Reagan administration cowardly and also wrote, among other things,

The American Navy has operated with exceptional skill in the Persian Gulf, despite the administration's introduction of an unwieldy and in some cases inappropriate force structure, and despite its hesitance to use its forces as other than diplomatic symbols, floating targets that are invitations to an international incident

Jim Webb opposed the Reagan administration's Soviet policies, policies on Japan, European policies, and Persian Gulf policies. Now he wants to hide behind President Reagan?

Pretty much politics as usual. Webb's courage was praised by Reagan, and the republicans desperately want to hide that fact.

Sounds like a pretty dumb way to do it, though.

The interesting question is if the Reagan family owns the late President's image to that extent.

Anything private, I would say yes, but a public statement - providing it is not distorted or taken out of context - I would think not.

    Anyone?

Rank hypocrisy on the part of Webb.

How dare Webb disagree with Reagan, and yet want people to know Reagan admired his courage!

Dirty politics as usual, on both sides.
