Nascar 2008

    We're less than a month away from the Daytona 500 and I'm starting to get excited about the new season.

    Winter testing has already started. I think it's very interseting that on a day he didn't have to be there, Dale Jr flew to Daytona to work with his new team.

    The dog and pony show media tours of various race shops have been going on this week. I haven't read anything that interests me too much out of them. Everybody's optimistic that they're going to run well this year.


    On the first day that Yahoo opened up their fantasy racing, I setup one league and am thinking about doing some more, even though I don't care for the way Yahoo does fantasy racing. ESPN's fantasy racing is supposed to be better than ever this year.

    And then, to make me even more excited, I found this. DJ replacing Rusty in the booth is excellent news.

    Of course, there has to be bad news to balance it out.

    Allen Bestwick isn't the bad news because I think he's good. The bad news is that Brad Daugherty is still around. Does this guy have naked pictures of somebody?

    I'm going to try and look on the bright side of Nascar this year. Instead of groaning about the Nascar Countdown show, which I rarely watch anyway, I'm thinking of rechristening it something like "The Rusty and Brad Unintentional Comedy Show", where the 2 try to outduel each other to show who knows less about Nascar.

    I started doing recaps of races last year, but it seemed like nobody cared, so I stopped doing them. If you'd like to see them again for this season, let me know.

    I don't know whether I said anything about the cars when they were revealed last year, but I like Dale Jrs cars for 2008. Even more, I like the fact that he went to Daytona on a day he wasn't supposed to be there just so he could work with the team more.

    Brian France said this last Monday that the sport needs to get back to its basics. I wholeheartedly agree with this. Maybe those basics will include going to Darlington Labor Day for the Southern 500.

    23 days to the Daytona 500. :thumbs:

    I'm getting excited about the new season too.

    I'm also glad to see that Rusty Wallace will be relegated to the pre-game and Dale Jarrett will be in the booth. Jarrett deserves a shot to see if he can provide any insight. Since he, Punch, and Petree know each other so well, perhaps they'll be more entertaining.

    It's also good that Joe Gibbs will be more full-time this year. He'll need to be there to keep Stewart and Busch from getting in fist-fights. That team is bound to give Toyota some wins this year.

    CC, keep those race reviews coming. I always read them and enjoyed them even though often I did not comment.

    Finally, GO BOBBY LABONTE!!!

    I think he will do a much better job!

    Not good news at all. He needs to find a new line of work.

    I always enjoyed them althought I didnt always comment about them. I would like to see you keep doing this.

    Moderator's question

    As a moderator, let me ask this about NASCAR threads. Last year we had a pretty huge thread, and I got some complaints about it. How about this year, we do one for each week or month of the season? "NASCAR - Pre-season thoughts?" would be an example of this thread. "NASCAR - month one" or "NASCAR - Week Four" or "NASCAR - Dover" would be an example if we're going to have one chronicling the whole season, especially with CCROB's insightful and helpful recaps. Fair or no?

    About Brad....what qualifes him as a NASCAR analyst? I've always wondered.

    I can't believe I'm giving Rusty some props, but I think his honesty is needed. His ego? Not so much.

    Why would someone complain about a long NASCAR thread?? Aren't there way more important things to be worried about around here?

    Brad grew up in NC. He stood at the fence at Rockingham as a young boy and Richard Petty gave him an autograph. He bacame a Petty fan and wore #43 on his jersey in the NBA. NASCAR is trying to build a diversity program and I think Brad is a part of it.

    I would guess it's because if somebody wanted to participate in the thread, they may have felt like they needed to read the whole thread in order to a) speak intelligently about what we're talking about and b) not repeat what has already been said.

    Or, maybe they just wanted to see my incredibly insightful recaps :smilewinkgrin: and had a hard time going through all the pages of that particular thread in order to find them. Since it doesn't really matter to me, I'm Ok with not having such long threads.

    In other words, Daugherty has no qualifications for being a Nascar analyst, as he proved time and time again last year. I sent in my complaint to ESPN, but, evidently, there weren't enough of them. But, as I said earlier, I'm going to follow the example of Brian and look on the bright side of life this year.

    Thanks for the kind words about my reviews. I hope I'm able to provide, at the very least, some entertaining reading.

    I forgot to include in my post that I am good with any size thread as well. I just find it crazy anyone would complain about a NASCAR thread lol

    I think they were from IRL fans. :)

    I'm for pretty much whatever would cut down on the arguments. So dividing it up by races would be fine with me.

    But can we make a rule that there is to be NO mention of Calvinism/non-Calvinism? :saint:

    2008, here we come: 'Year of the Hendricks.' I wonder how many points will be accumulated by them.

    I heard that WWF and NASCAR were gonna get together in a Calvinism Revival. They are going to decide the winners before the competition begins, and then laugh at all the fans cheering in the stands! JK.

    That's FUNNY!!!

    I liked the single thread on NASCAR last year, but I can see how someone who comes in near the end of the year could find such a long thread daunting. Splitting it up is fine.

    Brad Daugherty co-owned a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team (Liberty Racing) featuring such drivers as Kenny Irwin Jr. and Kevin Harvick. In 1997 Irwin won two Craftsman Truck Series races driving for Daugherty (Homestead-Miami Speedway in March and Texas Motor Speedway in June). Richard Petty has been a big backer of him, Petty was his hero, that is why he wore number 43 when he was a ball player. I believe Ned Jarret has been a big backer of him, too. All of this could have something to do with his job on the races.

    That is the same thing they said about David Pearson, I guess that is why he didn't do well in radio or TV, but I enjoyed hearing what he had to say. Come to think of it, that is what they have said of Bill Elliott, but he is a rather slow talker, but has a lot to say at times.

    As for the complaints about the threads, well, yeah, there are bigger fish to fry. But the experts and powers that are concerned with bandwidth in general and topic guidelines in particlar have their concerns. The members who had issues did have problems with having to look through 15 pages to find something 30 pages ago. That kind of thing. So whatever works best. Week by week? Fine. Month by month? Fine. I'm not going to mandate anything. Whatever works best. I think it will be more user friendly and will cut down on the carping. Or at least give me an excuse to bat it down :thumbs:

    I can't wait for the season to start.

    DH and I are taking the 14th off of work to watch the Duels.

    Looking forward to reading the race recaps.

    I'm rooting for a champion from RCR this year - don't care which driver.
