Nascar at Atlanta

I'm afraid I don't have much for you about this race. I worked until midnight Saturday, which, since it was time change weekend, meant that I virtually worked until 1 am. By the time we got home from church, I was dragging, but tried to watch the race, but wound up sleeping most of the afternoon. But, I can give you what I have and everybody can fill in the blanks on what I missed.

Cool. Skipped all the pre-race nonsense and came in just in time for the final pit road reports.

This race is really boring.

And this is where I fell asleep. I didn't fall asleep due to the race like I did so much last year. I deliberately sat in my blue chair, which is what my wife and I call the sleeping chair because it's sooo comfortable.

Took a much needed nap and came back with 38 laps to go and Kyle Busch leading. Oh, sorry, Kurt Busch is leading and goes on to win.


Yeah, that's pretty much my recap. Not much to it this time.

I do want to address this idea of Atlanta as the "new" Darlington. I guess I understand why they're saying that because of how it chews up tires, but Atlanta is not Darlington. It's not just the tire wear that makes Darlington what it is. It's also the fact that the shape of Darlington makes it tough to get around. Darlington has 2 different turns, but Atlanta doesn't have that.

I think I might like Atlanta having the Labor Day race, if only because I think I'm going to it, but I'd still rather see the Southern 500 running again at Darlington on Labor Day. Killing the Southern 500 remains the dumbest thing that Nascar's ever done.

 

I never thought I was missing something by watching pre-race. I just didn't want to miss the start of a race by not having pre-race on. I was able to finish up a game of Star Wars Trivial Pursuit with my sons instead of watching stupid pre-race.

On the only racing board I go to, which is primarily a sim racing board, there's a backlash going on over Fox's repeated Digger nonsense. One guy said that his 2 year old leaves the room when the Digger cartoon is on. On the one hand, I'm curious who the audience is for Digger, because I can't imagine actual racing fans caring about that sort of nonsense. If you're a race fan and you like Digger, well, I don't know what to say, because Digger is complete nonsense and adds absolutely nothing to the broadcast.

 

This was true for one race, the fall race in 2007 (or was it 2006?). The races in 2008 were pretty good, especially the spring race.
