Nascar at Martinsville

    Rusty Wallace: "I don't think I've ever seen this many brake problems this early in the race."

    Brad Daugherty: "I have no clue what I'm talking about, so I'm going to fake it."

    Well, it's possible that I paraphrased Brad's comment.

    Robin Miller said it best in an interview I saw the other day.

    I was planning on a blog of the race for you, but I was too tired and halfway through is no time to start. I can see that I've missed quite a bit of unintentional comedy by not blogging during ESPN's portion of the schedule. I hope to get back to it next week.

    Funny thing is Rusty is considered by some to be absolutely the most insightful NASCAR commentator around.

    Really? That's astounding. But, I will give Rusty some credit, because Rusty clearly knows something about racing. Rusty's problem is that he's not good at communicating what he knows. The guys who have so much natural ability in a particular sport often don't have the ability to communicate because they could rely on their talent so much. Contrast Rusty with Dale Jarrett, who has stated that he knows he didn't have the talent of Rusty, or Dale Earnhardt, but he succeeded because he developed his communication skills, which have served him very well in the broadcasting booth.

    There was a recent rumor, reported by Rusty's brother Kenny (the laughing hyena of Nascar), that Rusty was going to be back in the car driving next year. Rusty's denied it, but a rumor like that makes me wonder if ESPN is going to let Rusty go, and Rusty's floated a little trial balloon to see if anybody would be interested in hiring him to drive. If Bill Elliott and Mark Martin can still drive, I see no reason why Rusty couldn't.

    If ESPN is going to remove their Unintentional Comedy Team of Rusty and Brad for next season, I better get going and do some blogging over the next 4 weeks.

    It's never over til it's over. We've all heard this and we all know it's true, but it somehow seems like the championship is over. I see no way for anybody to catch Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie Johnson is clearly the best driver in Nascar right now. For all the talk and hype and kissing up to Kyle Busch early in the season, Jimmie has cemented his status as the best driver in Nascar.

    There was a very telling stat given in the broadcast yesterday. In the last two years, the leader of the Chase after Martinsville DID NOT go on to win. That sounds bad for Johnson until you realize that he was the one who passed the leader the last two years and won. Now he has a larger lead after Martinsville than he had before. Roush cars are strong on the 1 1/2 mile tracks upcoming, but Johnson will be consistent, at worst, and will remain on top.
