The National Do Not Call Registry is open for business, putting consumers in charge of the telemarketing calls they get at home. The Federal Government created the national registry to make it easier and more efficient for you to stop getting telemarketing sales calls you don't want. You can register online at http://www.DONOTCALL.GOV if you have an active email address. If you live in a state west of the Mississippi River (including Minnesota or Louisiana), you can call toll-free, 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236), from the number you wish to register. Phone registration will open to the entire nation on July 7. Registration is free.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - One thousand people per second signed up Friday to get on a free "do not call" list that will prevent telemarketers from bothering them at home, swamping telephone lines and a Web site set up to handle demand.

Eager Americans rushed to place their home phone numbers on the Federal Trade Commission's list shortly after President Bush launched the measure in a White House ceremony.

By noon the list had grown to 370,000 and was increasing by 1,000 per second, the FTC said.

The do-not-call list should help Americans enjoy their private time without unwanted interruptions, Bush said a few hours after the list was opened up for registration.

"When Americans are sitting down to dinner or a parent is reading to his or her child, the last thing they need is a call from a stranger with a sales pitch," Bush said in a White House Rose Garden ceremony.

Telemarketers who call numbers on the list after Oct. 1 will face penalties of up to $11,000 per call, as well as possible consumer lawsuits.

Consumers can sign up for the list by logging on to (http://donotcall.gov), while those living west of the Mississippi river can also register by calling 1-888-382-1222.

Consumers will not have to pay to get on the list, as it will be funded by telemarketers.

This national register is for WIMPS!!!
This is just another example of the goverment trying to take care of us. Many of us will say we do not want goverment interfernce. As a registered Conservative in NY, I believe that I should be responsible for myself. Therefore, I have the option of buying a telephone recorder and/or having Call ID. Furthermore, I am strong enough, as Nancy Reagan said "Just say NO".
Here is one more hit below the belt. Have you ever used a telephone sales call as an opportunity to witness for Christ?

Isn't the pentagon building a national database of all citizens? Could this be the first voluntary step?   [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

The government is "us" - it is our collective will expressed within the limits of the Constitution. If we want the option of being spared those obnoxious calls, what's wrong with the government providing us with the option? What private firm would have the resources and clout to do the same?

I guess I am a WIMP then; because I signed up immediately. [IMG]

I already have an answering machine AND caller ID. That doesn't stop the phone from ringing all day and all night. And I still have to stop what I am doing, get up and go look at the phone to see who is calling.

And please don't suggest I shut my ringer off. I have family in four different states and I should not have to shut my ringer off to avoid telemarketers and take a chance on missing my family's calls.

This law is the greatest thing since slice bread!

We've had "Do not call" in Massachusetts for a while now, and it is working well. The state government did not tell me what to do--I told the state government what to do! I don't feel that they are trying to control or take that which is my responsibility. If there was any control issue, it was that the telemarketers were trying to control my options for purchasing goods.
    Blessings!

''People are signing up in droves,'' says David Torok, national project manager for the Do Not Call Registry. He would not say how many signed up over the weekend, but on Friday, its first full day of accepting names, 735,000 people registered. The Federal Trade Commission, which manages the list, will release new figures today.

The FTC expects about 60 million registrants the first year.

I waited for the rush to end.. hate standing in long lines. But, I may miss listening to them extoll the virtues of a product I am not interested in. I have started doing what my pastor does... he asks how long the cal would take and asks for equal time to present the Gospel. they usually hang up.

Thank You! You are the first person to answer my question about witnessing to the telephone salesman. I think your pastor has the perfect way to handle the situation.
Now another thought, do we now know how others feel when we do street preaching, door-to-door knocking, ect?

</font>[/QUOTE]Another WIMP here...I just this minute signed up! (Was waiting for the "traffic" to clear!)

I have an answering machine, but I do not have caller ID. I used to have it when it was $4.95 per month. When it went to $6.95 per month, I cancelled it, and now I think it is $9.95 per month. I have a problem with paying almost 10 bucks per month to let me "see" who is calling. Actually, I think this system should be set up to make EVERY phone number "do not call", and if you WANT them to call, you should register your phone number.

But that's just my opinion! [IMG]

    PRAISE THE LORD!!!!
I just had a telphone sales call. I asked how long it would take. She said five minutes. So I asked for five minutes, SHE SAID YES. As I presented the gospel, she said she keeps backsliding. I recommeded she look in the yellow pages for a Southern Baptist Church. She said she would. Please pray for Roxanne, that she will atttend a church tomorrow morning. I also gave her my email address.

PS My wife and I did not need the insurance she was selling.

I agree that the do not call list is the greatest thing since sliced bread. In contrast to some, I believe that government is what we make it, and it is not necessarily the monster that some make it out to be. I support strong, responsive and representative government! Three cheers for the government of the USA. As our representative, it is the hope of the world.
