NBC's new television show

another great reason to throw out the TVs.

I actually am looking forward to seeing this television show for myself.

 

This is why I became a channel surfer. As usual we will always have some bad programming on T.V., the T.V. show "Book of Daniel" is not the first to depict Christian characters with human problems. Anybody remember the "The Thorn Birds"?

Not that I think it would really do any good, I wrote NBC an email anyway. Basically saying that this was a new low for them, that I'm sure there are families like this where no one is really committed to Christ and it shows in their lives, but that depicting a family where Christ is honored and served, even through life's problems, probably wouldn't make for "good television."
"Seventh Heaven" came close, but when the time came in those stories where the message of the gospel was needed, of course they didn't put it forth. This show seems to be a mockery from what I've read and seen on their website.

Made a point of NOT watching it tonight.

 

I watched.

It is basically the typical half-witted, sophmoric, "shock-em-so-they-watch-again", mind and spirit numbing drivel that is network TV.

I can take a dramatic story that displays the "falleness" of humans, especially if it has at least a little bit of an uplifting or redeeming value. This show has none!

It is blatantly offensive to Episcopals, Catholics, Christians in general and anyone other thinking, descent American. I imagine it is trying to be "Desperate Houswives" with some liberal Christians and their friends thrown in. In other words, it may be a huge hit!

...and the major networks wonder why they "lost" me (and my demographic) to the "History Channel", "National Geographic Channel", etc 15 years ago!

Exactly as I described it, Michael52, with only having seen the ads - "Desperate Houswives" + "Joan of Arcadia" + "The Simpsons". What a formula!

 

Have you ever noticed some folks will bend over backwards to ge understanding and keep an open mind about something that is liberal and left wing even if the adertisments leave no question in ones mind about how it is going to be? And in spite of the fact that we have seen it over and over?

There are alot of member on this board. We all can agree that this show is a mockery of Christianity in all its forms. We should petition NBC. We would need everyone to participate as well as having it be headed by our webmaster. I'll see if I can draw up a petition tell me what you all think....??????

In actuality, the AFA's refused to review a copy of the pilot eposide of this show, even though NBC offerred to send them a copy. This must be taken into consideration.

I had never heard of this show at all. I'm one of the few who stumbled upon it Friday evening while channel surfing. I missed the first 15 or so minutes, but ended up watching most of it. I thought the show was interesting, but as a Christian did not find it offensive and most definitely did not find it an attack upon Christianity. But I didn't find the show particularly captivating or original. It was yet another show about a guy whose life is filled with problems. The difference was that the lead was an Episcopal priest, and that he occaisionally talks to Jesus.

Friends, as a Christian who has seen the pilot of this show, I can tell you with sincerity and objectivity that this show is not worthy of condmnation, boycotting, or anything of the sort. But it's also not worthy of any literary praise, either. It's not irreverent, and it's adequately interesting, but that's pretty much it. I suspect that this show will attract a small following, but I doubt the show will go beyond one or two seasons. Unless there is a bit more character development and some resolution of storylines, I doubt the audience will be captivated by this show for anything longer than the short duration.

 

It was my understanding that it is a "limited" series..meaning its only planned for 5 or 6 episodes.

I watched it, but the major problem was 7 mins of show, then 4 mins of commercials...throughout the whole program.

If it had been ignored, I doubt it would have done as well as it did in the ratings.

 

RockRambler, a new show is typically produced via a single pilot episode, or via a limited run (a pilot and, say, five episodes), depending on whatever the airing network agrees to. The decision to pick up the show for a full season is typically made after the airing of the pilot (for pilot-only shows) and sometimes during the run of a multi-episode trial, such as this show.

What constitutes single-episode pilot and multiepisode trial is sometimes blurred. For example, the reinvented "Battlestar Galactica" was produced with a single pilot episode, but that pilot episode was four hours long. It originally aired as a miniseries (2-hour segments that aires over 2 nights), but when the show was picked up for a full season, the pilot was reaired as four 1-hour episodes. But shows like "Battlestar Galactica" tend to be expensive to produce due to their high post-production requirements. A show like "The Book of Daniel" is relatively inexpensive, where most of the money goes into production itself with very little post-production, and the budget can thus withstand a multiepisode trial instead of a single pilot trial.

 

I have to disagree, John.
I have seen a number of clips from the show.
I thought the portrayal of the Lord Jesus was deeply irreverent and flippant.

I think it is ridiculous to petition to ban a show you've never seen simply based on clips and rumors. That is acting on fear and ignorance - not a good combination. If you're going to condemn something you should know what it is.

As for the show itself, I doubt I'll be watching because I find sit-coms as a class irritating and boring (with occasional exceptions). This one almost has my interest simply because of this discussion of it.
