Need Help Again

    My computer is running slow, I ahve tons of pop ups. I know it is spyware and other junk. I ahve two different to find and delete it, ad aware and spybot. In 2 days I have run these two programs at least 6 times,and each time it finds and deletes spyware. I can run them just minutes apart and it will still have spyware. I think it is a worm or a virus or something casuing this. I DO NOT have an updated virus program, basically becasue I can't afford it.
    Is there anything I can do?

    There's a free online virus scanner that actually found a worm my Norton Anti virus missed. Here's the link. It's pretty quick and you can choose to let it delete any viruses and worms while doing the check.

    By the way, Donna, some SpyWare is actually programs you've loaded on your computer when you add something like a music player, etc. They have the potential to learn what you watch or listen to and that's how they 'spy' on you. Websites like Iwon.com is horrible!

    ICQ loads hundreds of temp files. When I first learned to delete the *.tmp files under find files and folders, I had over 3,000 temp files! I got rid of ICQ and haven't had any since. Boy did that make my computer run much faster!

    Hope you can get it fixed!

    The housecall won't scan my computer for some reason, it says something about activex settings, and I have no idea what that is or what to do about it.

    You may have a firewall that's blocking it. You can change the ActiveX settings or if there's a little bar under the address bar when you open the page, you can sometimes allow activeX bypass for that time only.

    Sorry, posted to quickly....
    When you run spybot and adaware, what programs are they telling you they found? (i.e. DSO exploit, Huntbar, IBIS, etc.)
    Depending on the OS, there are several ways to get rid of the junk that's on your computer.....
    Let me know what you've got in there and I'll see if I can help.

    Try running them again....Once we know what the programs are, I can probably direct you to the correct site to download the removal tools needed....
    Also, ActiveX blocking will prevent you from getting into windows update.....
    Depending on the problems found, there are several work-arounds available.

    Donna, why bother to pay for anti virus software when the best one is available free online? All the people I know that are into computers are using AVG anti virus which is significantly better than a number of ones offered for sale in computer stores.

    You download and update it completley free. It is reccomended by a number of internet companies. check it out at -

    By the way, when you are considering upgrading computers, bear in mind that Apple Mac have not had a virus for over 13 years! and they do not have anti virus software on there P.C.s relying on the free software OSX update to gaurd against viruses. Well worth a look [​IMG]

    Thanks Ben, I like that virus scan, it's easy to use.
    It fixed some stuff yesterday, but today it says I have 'trojan horse downloader', which I get rid of yesterday, I thought. It has to be something reprpoducing itself. So I'm back to work again.

    Donna, I used Housecall after using my Norton Sunday night because I'd gotten a Norton warning that a website I'd gone to looking for Christian music lyrics had tried to download a trojan worm. I got the same ActiveX message. There was a little 'shield' looking thing which I clicked on to load/ allow the ActiveX to load temp. on my computer for them to do the scan.

    I also ran their spyware check and had 4 plus about 29 cookies. Baptist Board loads cookies to recognize you when you come back, as do your craft sites where you're a member. I was able to clear all the spyware tho. [​IMG]

    I ended up doing a total system recovery(not sure thats the right phrase) saved all my pictures, articles bibles tudies and recipes. Lost my favorites list and music. But I'm working fine now. And I did a bunch of windows updates and protection downloads Trotter suggested so maybe I can help not letting it get this bad again.
    NOW I HAVE A FIREWALL! I also have eveything on the scheduler to run every week automatically,and I'm sure I am now paranoid enough to run it myself at least weekly.
    This year is our 25th anniversary, Robert would like to if possible get me a new computer! I'll have to learn to take better care of it. But I guess I haven't done so bad on this one, bought it April '99. Almost 6 years old, I think I'm about due a new one. Let mom have this one for mahjongg.

    We have ours set to run on Wednesday night while we're at church. That way it doesn't interfer with anyone and yet is done on a regular basis.

    I'm glad you got it all fixed Donna!
