Hi, I am new to SBC-Yahoo DSL (express) after having dial-up ISP's before.

What suggestions on hints could you offer me? Yes, I still need to read up on all of the new "features" that I have beside "speed."

In addition, since DSL is "on" with their fancy modem with 3 lights turned on constantly but with 4 green lights turned on when I am on the "internet", then should I turn off the active "windows" when I am done with surfing and after I have "shut down" the computer? ...I do this anyway.

Also, should I "disable" the local connection manually (through the control panel). . . to prevent hackers or whoever from doing harm...when I leave the modem on but the computer shut down? . . .Yes I have Zone Alarm (zone labs,) eTrustPestPatrol, Spybot, NOD32, to help keep my computer safe. . . . I still have to download and use whatever DSL Yahoo features are for me that is a part of this package for the 12 months contract[and this is free, a part of the package].

    thanks, mr. messy

you don't need to worry about anything when your computer is off, no one can access it.

I've got SBC Yahoo DSL, with a 2WIRE 1701HG (wireless and wired router + modem). It includes a firewall, and is usually sufficiently secure for the average broadband user.

Depending on the type of modem you have, you may or may not have a hardware firewall. If you have Windows XP, enable Windows Firewall. The ZoneAlarm link that trotter gave is a good alternate.
