Feel that many Baptists believe that some disciplines often associated with alternative health, Eastern religions, et al, are "New Age".

How many of these do YOU consider New Age? (Not "might be New Age" if a wierdo held it, but are actually by nature/content ARE New Age)

Yeah, what is it? Looking into the iris to tell the future like a palm reader looks at palms?

I checked new age on that one, cause it just didn't sound kosher. [IMG]

Hmmm... good question, Dr. Bob. I would answer, none of the above. All of these things, even Iridology (Iridology practitioners claim to diagnose "imbalances" that can be treated with vitamins, minerals, herbs, etc.) have been around for a long time, some of them for literally thousands of years. What it shows is a great poverty of creativity in the New Age movement.

We have quite a few of these folk now up here in the North Carolina mountains. They say the "center of power" has "shifted" from under Sedona, Arizona to under Asheville. Many of us here wish it would quite promptly shift back ;) .

Take astrology, for example. It has been a "science" since the dawn of humanity. The ancient Caldeans devised the signs of the Zodiac now in usage. However (and I LOVE pointing this true scientific fact out to practicioners), due to our continually expanding universe the Zodiac signs are now off by ONE sign<g>. What does that do to their calculations? I never get a good answer.

Someone once asked me, "What sign is God?"

"Yield," I said.

Astrology is condemned in the Bible, tho, isn'it? I think that is one of the #1 choices for new age. Along with the yin/yang. New age has its roots in that one. Rainbows have always been their symbol, even tho God gave it to us for a sign. But that is why they chose it, because God would never destroy the earth or the New Age.

Iridology has alot of truth in it. By looking into the eye, you can see blood pressure problems, liver diseases, lymph problems, etc. New age grabs hold of alot of alot of natural ways, but we can't give it to them and turn ourselves away from natural remedies and diagnoses.

Even homeopathy has new age practices, but if used properly, Christians do have alternative medicines.

hello from smileyfish "rainbow", and by the way, I do not personally appreciate the word "rainbow" being sullied by giving it a bad connotation....( and you don't want to see "an angry trout" LOL) ...I personally like the word and really have fun playing with the word, and since our last name is Trout, how did you guess??????? LOL I have quite a few of them in designs etc. around my house, (which by the way I call my 'stuff' that women like)"nesting materials".......and yes, there will come a day when i have enough 'nesting materials' but for now, if it looks like it has a 'trout' design on it, I 'covet' it.....just bought a whole set of dinnerware service for four with a TROUT on it, it sure is neat, and yesterday I found a nice basket (on sale, yippee) that had a trout design around the edge of it. so by popular demand (mine) I just enjoy it and BY WAY OF A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT we just have added a little addition to our "pond" ~~~~~~ little Emily made her appearance this past Thurs. and she is a welcome addition to our growing family..

my best wishes to all of you for a very Merry Christmas and A Happy Healthy New Year!!!!!!> smileyfish (rainbow) says hello!!!! [IMG]

By the way this new age junk is just old age JUNK being recycled as something new!!!!

repackaged and retooled for the NEW AGE movement.

Go to your local bookstore like Waldens and see that "religion" is moved in the corner and right down the middle in a large section is NEW AGE. Whether its been around for ever or not under any name new age or eastern or voodoo or whatever its not going to enter my home.

That's funny - that's not what I see in my local bookstores. In fact, under the general heading of "religion," I find mostly Christian books, plus there's a large section headed "Christian." Christian fiction, Christian History, Christianity, Christian Reference . . . a lot lot lot of material.

Not to say that the New Age section of a bookstore isn't large - it often is. However, they throw lots of stuff in that category, and it seems to me that though much of it is truly just general "new age," just as much is serious work, no matter how much we may disagree with it.

New age is as new as Baal. Same garbage...new name..

Paganism is paganism with many names to confuse the lost.

The Bible tells us to preach Christ and Him crucified...at this crazy time of year let us not forget the Real reason for the season "For unto us a SON is born:::::" And why he came:::::to die for sinners and take our sins upon himself..... [IMG] [IMG]

I've got to admit that a lot of the things I used to laugh at like homeopathy and herbal healing, I'm finding work more and more.

Well, since my wife is an alternative medicine practioner, she had to study ALL of the various disciplines. She could see bits and pieces of trutha nd good in most.

Christians give "knee-jerk" reaction to things like a rainbow (promise of God, hello?) or the idea of balance (light/dark, male/female, hot/cold) that is headed by yang and yin. EVIL we shout.

But not so. Just paranoia. Even astrology, as the signs of the mazzeroth (greek = zodiac) are a part of Jewish religion.

IT IS TIME CHRISTIANS RECLAIMED NATURAL HEALTH from the new agers who have perverted it! God made the energy, the body, and the way it works.

Modern medicine has many practices that can be considered alternative, much of it is hidden under the label of “holistic” medicine. Sometimes these alternative practices do work but be aware that there are philosophies that may be used to "strengthen" these practices that are alien and antagonistic to Christian beliefs.

A non-medical example: Karate or the martial arts, can be practiced as a Christian but we need to be alert to philosophy behind it and not fall prey to false doctrine.

One of my favorite statements from a physician is that ‘sometimes patients just want to talk and know that someone is listening’. In many cases the body heals itself without intervention and we just need to be patient and wait for it to happen. (Of course there are other times when we need to DO SOMETHING AND DO IT FAST!).

...new age or eastern or voodoo...
There's no arguement that we must stay clear of evil practices, but when we lump different religious practices together like that, we do nothing less than show ignorance.

I've been told that if you follow any of the practices of feng shui, you're practicing satanism. If you have a horseshoe over your door, you're practicing something occultic. If you have a statue of Jesus, you're breaking the 2nd commandment. I have all of these things in my home, and I have to tell you I think I've got the most most serene, godly, and well decorated den of evil on the block.

Oh, I mustn't forget to mention my pagan Christmas tree and druidic mistletoe.

IT IS TIME CHRISTIANS RECLAIMED NATURAL HEALTH from the new agers who have perverted it! God made the energy, the body, and the way it works.
I wholeheartedly agree!!

These are the only ones I've not ever heard of before: Kinesiology, Rainbows and Iridology

I know what a rainbow is...but I don't understand how a natural phenomena would pertain to "New Age".

Would you mind giving a brief explanation as to what these three are?

Quite honestly most things that people consider "new age" aren't new at all...they are quite ancient actually. I wonder if the term "New Age" pertains more toward the new age of people understanding or practicing these things, more than the newness of the practices themselves..

I'm not of the "Knee-Jerk" mindset ....dangerous combination, fear and ignorance.

My way of avoiding the influence of the New Age philosophy is to avoid eating new age vegtables. ;) So far it works. :D :D :D
