As a matter of fact I once had a friend who was a very Calvinistic pastor who had met his wife on a dating site.

He’s no longer around though now and I don't expect to ever see him again. It seems he got caught up in an adulterous affair with the church secretary and this was going on for some time, although many were becoming suspicious.

Finally, the suspicions spread and rumors reached his wife. When he got home that day he got into a huge fight with his wife and ended up hitting her so hard that she died.

Later, after he had had been found guilty and was about to be sentenced the judge paused to ask him, “What was going on in your mind when you found out you had killed had your wife?” Apparently, he said, “I was thinking WHEW, I’m glad that is over with!”

I'd explain it to you, but it has to do with that the funniest jokes often have a ring of truth in them, and with that sometimes the truth hurts.

I'm kind of confused, your "punch line" is very similar to a Calvinist joke that can easily be found all over the internet just google search "calvinist falling down steps joke"

So my question is did you really have a friend that this happened too, if not why couldn't you just tell the joke that is readily available on the internet. I mean its one thing to joke about the punchline, but to falsify a story about a guy cheating on and then killing his wife takes it a bit too far.

Personally, I saw a very similar version of this joke online before I ever heard the one about falling down steps. Maybe that joke was built off this one. The only part I re-worked was the meeting on a website to stay on subject. Sheesh, I'm confused, I was supposed to be concerned about a bunch of over sensitive sour puss Calvinist whining about the content within my joke?!!

To be clear, from my perspective: The joke takes several profound jabs at the issue of personal responsibility before ending with the punch line regarding the Calvinist Pastor’s thinking which was engrossed on pre-destination. Concerning responsibility it also has to do with the pastor being in the position of judgment and that the judge apparently thought that kind of thinking was – yes - crazy...hence, the set up of the joke that he wasn’t going to be seeing his friend ever again. IOWs - the pastor didn’t take personal responsibility even after a hint of the offer of grace coming for repentance and therefore during sentencing he got the book thrown at him.

Further, it is perfectly reasonable that the author had the challenge of setting up the joke concerning responsibility and judgment and needed a crime with motive to do so. The joke was creatively constructed and is humorous because of being meaningful through the elements of truth within it while it addressed the complex problems of deterministic thinking. That some would be offended because of a joke teasing and being derogatory about their position and therefore they would look for reason to attack the content and the one who presented it merely points to them being a bit thin skinned because the jokes on them -or better said, their position.

You introduced the "joke" as if it was a personal story - "As a matter of fact I once had a friend who was a very Calvinistic pastor who had met his wife on a dating site."

If I truly had a friend who did such a thing (murder, etc.), it would be no laughing matter- at least not for me. I'm glad it was just a joke.
