You know what bells and whistles do? Eat battery power! The phone T has now isn't so bad about it, but his last one (did everything but music) was dead in two hours. Worst phone he's ever had and no telling how much the university paid for.

The iPhone is truly an exceptional device.
I expect that it will be as popular as iPods in a few years.

I just finished watching Steve give his keynote speech on the new iPhone.

From what I saw, it looked great!

I'm counting on the first person 'round here that owns one to give us the scoop. My cell phone is corporate so I know we won't be getting one, but it does look like a cool tool. [IMG]

ACtually, the corporate market is a good one for this, though mostly only execs would probably get one in most companies at this time.
The email and web capabilities seems to blow away the competition from blackberry and Palm.

Apple stock went up over $7 yesterday.

Many people don't remember but the basic 5 gb iPod was $399 in 2001 and then the 10gb was $499 a little while later.
once these get under $300 they will really sell like hotcakes.

They won't be available until june though since they have to go through FCC approval.

One thing I am curious about is how much they willl allow 3rd party development for the device.
    Should be interesting to see.

You can do a lot with a 480x320 screen.

I listened yesterday to a report on NPR bout this toy....the guy said the graphics were amazing, the touchscreen works great...but the drawbacks are (rightnow) you can only use cingulair cell service, & you can't add any software to OS. Just what it comes with. Said the price will range from $499-$599. Oh, said something about the net connection being a really s-l-o-w one.

I have used verizon and Sprint service for mobile broadband and they are both rather good but I hear that Cingular is a lot slower.

As far as adding software, I haven't seen any official mention of that either way at this point.

From the look of the "home" screen, it would look to me like they DO intend on allowing more apps.
I think most people are just assuming that no more programs can be added, which may or may not be true.

I saw a coupe of pieces that quoted Jobs as saying no third party software. His reasons were dumb, though... didn't want someone's phone to crash the qwest coast's network...

It looks cool, but until the price drops WAY down, I ain't interested. I think that the iP{hone is definitely something that is coming along at the right time, though.

Don't know about the reasoning for the software, but the guy I listened to got to "play" with one & I figure did his reasearch...He said that there was NO SW available rite now other than what comes packaged...3rd party or not. They have a contract with cingulair (didn't say how long) but he said that WAS part of the problem with the net. Should figure the price being it's new!!!
