I've read several posts today that make mention of Charles Wesley, Fanny Crosby and other great writers of the past. Their hymns are alive and well today, sung in churches both Baptist and beyond. Some of my favorites are some of the Reformation hymns such as "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." They don't get much better than that. Just my humble opinion. [IMG]

But what about some of the newer hymns of today? True, the style is different, but I believe there are hymns that have been written recently that are some of the greatest sentiments I've read or sung. "In Christ Alone" by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty (No, not Michael English's barn-burner), "How Deep the Father's Love for Us" also by Townend, and "Wonderful, Merciful Savior" by Dawn Rodgers are some of the new "classics" that I believe may be around a long time. Who's to say they won't last 400 years like some of our favorites? We won't be around to see. If the Lord waits that long to come back (please Lord, don't!) I believe that the Church of that time will still be singing the hymns of our faith, new and old. Just my humble opinion. [IMG]

    God bless!

I agree. And I believe we'll all be singing the "Hallelujah Chorus," too!

Personally, I think it's been interesting to see how some of the songs which were written back in the 1970s/1980s sung in Outreach type congregations from the Jesus Movement are now found in main stream -

    Lion of Judah
    Our God Reigns
    As the Deer

just to name a few. ;)

I agree, this is one of my favorite hymns. Unfortunately I haven't heard any of the others you mentioned.

I have also sang Lion of Judah at Church. Heard 'Our God Reigns at mass in my Catholic days.

I have heard 'As the Deer' which I like as well.

    God Bless

Our God Reigns is the favorite song of Pope John Paul II.

It, and the others you speak of, are NOT HYMNS. No comparrison with A Mighty Fortress or How Firm a Foundation.

Dr Bob, could you tell me what exactly constitutes a hymn. I wouldn't consider 'As the Deer' to be a hymn but in my opinion 'How Deep the Father's Love' would compare favourably against the majority of Fanny Crosby hymns.

Of course if you are going to compare it to some of our classics by Luther, Wesley etc. you might have a point, but if you compare it to some of the other hymns in my hymnbook I think it stands up very well.

    God Bless

G'day & welcome Joshua [IMG] I have been known to mention Watts, Wesley, etc [IMG]

I can't recall coming across those songs you mentioned, but do agree that there are some songs written today that can match it with the older ones...Boy I must be sick...

One of my favourite modern writers is Geoff Bullock (when he puts his mind to it..) I think he has written a few songs that might be "stayers", eg Holy (Lord You Are So Holy), This Kingdom, I Will Behold, Oh The Mercy Of God, etc

    Amen [IMG]

I don't mean to start an argument here, Dr. Bob, but the three songs I mentioned are, in fact, hymns by musical definition.

According to the Dictionary of Liturgy and Worship (Ed. Davies, SCM Press 1986) and other journals and books I have on the subject, a hymn is a "song of praise; in steady, rhythmic meter. The earliest hymns are found to be in iambic pentameter, but quickly spread to different meters and time signatures." Irregular meters often blur the line, but they are no less hymns just because they are new.

"How Deep the Father's Love for Us", "In Christ Alone" and some other new songs (granted, not much of the modern praise and worship movement) present the Gospel in metric verses with simple lyrics and melodies. They are excellent examples of today's great hymns, as they have good theology, singable tunes, and no syncopative hurdles to overcome like most of today's praise and worship.

Of course, one could make an argument for the other side, but as a music student and music educator, this is the view I'll adopt. Just my humble opinion. [IMG]

    BB,

"How Deep the Father's Love for Us" and "In Christ Alone" can both be found in the Worship Together Songbook 5.0

    Here's the texts:

HOW DEEP THE FATHER'S LOVE FOR US
    Stuart Townend

How deep the Father's love for us,
    How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss.
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
    Bring many sons to glory.

Behold the Man upon a cross,
    My sin upon His shoulders.
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
    Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
    Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life.
I know that it is finished.

    I will not boast in anything;
No gifts, no power, no wisdom.
But I will boast in Jesus Christ:
    His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
    I cannot give an answer.
But this I know with all my heart:
His wounds have paid my ransom.

IN CHRIST ALONE (MY HOPE IS FOUND)
    Keith Getty, Stuart Townend

In Christ alone my hope is found,
    He is my light, my strength, my song;
    This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease.
My Comforter, my All in All,
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless Babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
'Til on the cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied.
    For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,
    Light of the world by darkness slain;
Then, bursting forth in glorious day,
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stand in victory,
    Sin's curse has lost its grip on me;
For I am His, and He is mine,
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
    This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath,
    Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
    Can ever pluck me from His hand;
'Til He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

    WONDERFUL, MERCIFUL SAVIOR
    Dawn Rodgers, Eric Wyse

    Wonderful, merciful Savior
    Precious Redeemer and Friend,
Who would have thought that a Lamb could
    Rescue the souls of men?
O, You rescue the souls of men!

    REFRAIN
You are the One that we praise,
You are the One we adore.
You give the healing and grace
    Our hearts always hunger for,
O, our hearts always hunger for.

    Counselor, Comforter, Keeper,
    Spirit we long to embrace.
You offer hope when our hearts have
    Hopelessly lost our way.
O, we've hopelessly lost the way.

    REFRAIN

    Alimighty, infinite Father,
    Faithfully loving Your own.
Here in our weakness You find us
    Falling before Your throne,
O, we're falling before Your throne.

    REFRAIN

Hope this helps... great songs! Just my humble opinion. [IMG]

We have song *How deep the Father's Love* at our church....our music pastor is very contentious and reformed in his theology...also,very discerning. This is one he has found to be one of the good ones! He seeks out very good, biblically based and appropriately set to music songs, which we appreciate greatly! No 7-11 music at our church! [IMG]

We,also, sing a great new one called *I will Glory in my Redeemer*. It is a precious song(hymn) to our family.

But,all in all,we love the older great hymns of faith that have stood the test of time. *Be Thou My Vision*,*A Mighty Fortress*,etc. We love our christian heritage and hold to it as a treasure!

We,also, enjoy when scripture is put to music. Psalms or just wonderful verses in scripture are,if done well, very precious.

There is a lot of good stuff out there...unfortunately a lot of churches pass by the feast for the pig slop. I don't understand it! :(

Molly, I'm shocked. This song has at least 14 first person references! ;) [IMG]

Have you read "Worship By the Book" (ed by Carson)? Just wondering.

SBC! Hi! [IMG] How are you?...I haven't heard much from you lately.

As long as it has biblical depth, personal references don't bother me a bit...if the focus is on the right things. (God and His works, not man.)

Maybe we can like some of the same songs afterall!!!!! [IMG]

    Your Friend,

Humnos = song of worship, glorifying deity and not experience

psalmos = songs based on scriptures (literal or paraphrase)

ode = song of experience, life; bible qualifies this with "spiritual"

That's the Greek words for psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Most of the modern 7-11 music are odes that are even that spiritual! Could be love songs for my girlfriend.

For the Record, Our God Reigns was taken from:

    Isa.52 (KJV)
[7] How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

    Lyrics:

    Our God Reigns

How lovely on the mountains are the feet of him
who brings good news, good news
Announcing peace, proclaiming news of happiness
Our God reigns, Our God reigns

    Refrain
    Our God Reigns!
    Our God Reigns!
    Our God Reigns!
    Our God Reigns! Repeat

He had no stately form, He had no majesty
That we should be drawn to him.
He was despised and we took no account of him
Yet now he reigns with the most high

    Refrain

    ----------------------------

As the Deer was taken from this:

    Pss.42 (KJV)
[1] As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
[2] My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

    As The Deer

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after thee
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship you

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship you
