new pet tarantula

    I was driving the other day when I spotted the little guy scurrying across the road. I wasn't sure what I was seeing, so I turned around, and sure enough it was a big ol' hairy tarantula! I scooped him(?) into an old Sonic cup and took him home. Now I keep him in a plastic reptile cage at my desk at work. I have been having a great time watching it do its little routines, grooming itself, chasing crickets... its a very interesting animal. I got to looking on the web and there are some very remarkable species to look at. Lots of colors and patterns. God is so amazing that He would spend the attention to create so many different types of basically the same animal. I am trying to decide if I want to get some more of them. Does anyone here keep them?

    I'm always a little concerned about catching wildlife. Domestic-bred tarantulas are grown in a controlled environment, and are free of exposure to any harmful bacteria and the like. Also, domestic-bred tarantulas are more tolerant of human presence. You can pick them up and play with them, pet them, take them to the movies, buy them flowers, well, you know what I mean.

    But to your point, they really are cool creatures. There is a huge variety of spiders, includng tarantulas, depending on what part of the world the come from. Each is highly specialized and adapted to its oen unique envorinment. God wun't no dummy, wuzzee?

    I never had a pet tarantula, but my wife brought home a pet Madascar cockroach for her class. I touched it once. That was enough.

    Yeah, I wasn't planning to cuddle with him or anything ;) I think people who handle them are crazy, well I probably would handle one with gloves on... He seems to be adapting pretty well to captivity. He didn't eat for a couple of days, but he's had a few crickets since then, and he is pretty docile. I can open the cage and scoot him around with a paint brush (so he doesn't get hurt) and he isn't too skittish.

    Unless you have a particular allergy, their bite is no more painful than a bee sting. But be careful. I think all spiders are pretty cool.

    One time I was going into my apartment (where I lived when this story takes place). I opened the screen door and a tarantula fell on my head. I did an indian war dance and flung that thing away.

    I can pick up a car load of drunks at the worst places in town no problem...but spiders...UG! :eek: I just pick up the MORTEIN :D

    I have pet spiders, black hairy and agressive with turquoise fangs, beautiful little animals. But I let them stay outside. Ok, some come in to guard the windows.

    Won't let anyone kill them. They are fly eating machines. I was working near the front of my house one day and one wanted to duke it out with me. I left him be. :D Another lives in our concrete Japanese lantern.

    Hey TaterTot! It snowed today, so they are hibernating. But how could you resist a cute creature like this? Not only do they eat flies, they eat yellowjackets and grasshoppers. Good little pets with fashionable fangs, don't ya think? [​IMG]

    well, it got damaged somehow when I collected him, and he autotomized it (which is a fancy way of saying he pulled it off.) It will grow back when he moults.

    ok that picture of the spider is really starting to freak me out :eek: SBC dont do spiders....

    I do not think you could pay me enough money to have a pet spider... :eek:

    I don't know what happened. I caught him in a styrofoam cup, and when I was transfering him into a jar at home, he was holding on to the cup for dear life. I probably shook him a little too hard, not knowing any better at the time, and his leg got twisted or something. It was bent at a wierd angle and a little while later he dropped it. It's pretty common for them to lose legs, so I don't feel so bad about it now. He gets along just fine without it.
