New York City Transit Workers Strike

I think the Union is going to lose this one. The salary increase was a reasonable offer. The pension thing was kind of mean spirited, but the workers are being villified by the public for which they work, and the strike is illegal. I predict a court will be busting this strike soon, and the cost of striking is going to be too high, and they are going to end up with less than they would have had they accepted the last offer. The MTA should back off trying to stick it to the little guy though by raising the age of their pension when they have a billion dollar surplus. They are being very mean spirited and greedy there. The union needs to back off when it comes to the raises. 9 1/2% over three years is very reasonable, and the union should have accepted that and spent their time and efforts negotiating to maintain the pensions. They, too, are being mean spirited and greedy there. Hopefully, cooler heads will begin prevailing and they will work this out for the good of everyone. Otherwise, there will be no winners at the end of this rainbow.

These guys are in cohoots with the Muslim terrorists. They agreed to go on strike so that the subway tunnels can become secret passage ways so that the Islamo fascists can access all hte major buildings of the city by underground tunnels and no one can stop them. The worst part is that President Bush ordered this a year ago so that he could grab even more power and appear to the hero.

I remember when one of the NY papers went on strike back in the 50's, Times I THINK!

Anyway the strike lasted for about a year. I did some figuring with the numbers (Average wage before/after strike, and lost wages for duration of strike) of the settlement. I figured that, on the average, each employee would have to work for another 40 (+/-) years before the "raise" began adding income to their paycheck.

No doubt many lost homes, cars & other "time" purchases, but by gum they got their raise!

'Course back then houses and cars were basically ALL anyone bought "on time".

The groceries might be paid a week or month after purchase, but for all practical purposes, if you couldn't pay cash, you did without! Pretty good idea, I think!!!

Addendum: If it is illegal (the strike, that is), then these yo-yo's should be fired. Reagan did that with the Air Traffic Controllers back in the 80's and except for a few bumps along the way, that situation was quickly and sufficiently resolved.

Big trouble today is nobody in authority has the brass orbs to call for accountability from law breakers. ( might offend somebody )

 

The problem in NYC is caused by taxi regulation. If jitneys were permitted unionized transportation would be less necessary and overall costs to the users would be lower.

 

As the Son on a union worker, I give these guys a hearty for sticking up for thier rights!

Even their own international representatives did not endorse this strike.

One time when it was being debated whether or not the bus drivers here were going to go on strike, what they decided to do was not to strike, but for a period of time not to collect ticket money so that patrons rode for free. That way that got to pressure the government and did not inconvenience the public.

 

Yea, and then they can all become used car salesmen.

 

Just heard on Fox News that the TWU has recommended that the transit workers end the illegal strike and go back to work tonight. This strike is all but dead, and the Union loses this one BIG TIME, just as predicted.
