New York's Hevesi Violated Ethics Law, Panel Charges

Oct. 23 (Bloomberg) -- New York Comptroller Alan Hevesi violated state law by improperly using a government employee as a chauffeur for his wife without paying the state, the state Ethics Commission charged.


Ethics Commission spokesman Walter Ayres said the state Legislature would determine Hevesi's penalty. He may be fined, suspended or removed from office. Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, a Republican, and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat, have received copies of the report.


Hevesi, 65, a Democrat running for re-election in November, admitted last month that he used a staffer to drive his disabled wife for three years beginning in 2003, and he belatedly repaid the state about $83,000. The matter came to light after his Republican challenger, former Saratoga County Treasurer J. Christopher Callaghan, reported it to a toll-free telephone line set up by Hevesi to report government fraud and corruption.
