    FALWELL DENOUNCES CONSERVATION EFFORT
(Lynchburg, Virginia-AP) -- The Reverend Jerry Falwell says
the interfaith effort to get automakers to make more efficient
    vehicles is anti-American.
Falwell also said in a live interview with C-N-N yesterday
that global warming is nothing more than "mythology."
As for his vehicle of choice, it's a Chevy Suburban.
Falwell says both he and his wife drive the S-U-V's and
that he needs the extra space for his grandchildren, and students
    at Liberty College.
    His Website -- www-dot-falwell-dot-com -- currently
features a promotion for winning three Jeep Liberty S-U-V's.

Great, so now you're condemned to Hell if you believe in global warming, and you're anti-Christian if your car is fuel efficient.

It is hard to believe Falwell would even comment on this issue. I mean, he is just so quiet and shy. He never does or says anything to get attention. Oh, and he NEVER talks about himself.

    ARGH!

The environment should be an issue where liberal and conservative Christians can agree. Of course, Falwell seems to worship the free market more than Jesus.

I just think the slogan "What Would Jesus Drive" is a bit silly. I mean, really. Do we need to counch valid environmental concerns in a fussy slogan that, now after the "WWJD" craze, means practically nothing?

Agreed. Besides, the answer to the question is biblically clear. Jesus would drive a Honda, since in the NT, we're told that the desciples all left in one Accord.

The slogan "What Would Jesus Drive" is silly but I don't know why getting US automakers to make more enviromental friendly autos is anti American? Sounds like A Christian virtue to protect the enviroment God has entrusted us with.

Of course Falwell use to sell the Clinton Chronicles on the Old Time Gospel Hour that was not just silly but un becoming a Christian Ministry to attack a sitting President of the USA. So I don't know if Dr. Falwell is in the position to attack this campaign considering his own failures in this area.

John you made quite a leap to get to this statement from the opening post?

Do you mean to say that it's not the God-given right of every American man, woman and child to drive a vehicle the size of the Titanic and guzzle thousands of gallons of irreplaceable petroleum in the process?

And, to boot, keep ourselves in thrall to petty dictators that influence American foriegn policy away from democracy and human rights?

Same old problem: Jerry confuses politics with theology -- to the detriment of both.

Isn't it amazing in how a simple statement can cause a chain reaction in the posters and have a varied assortment of answers?! By the way, isn't it up to Jerry Falwell what vehicle he prefers for his own transportation? After all, it shouldn't be anybody's business what type of vehicle I am driving..... but for the curious, I am driving a 1996 Ford Taurus wagon (which I have purchased second hand two years ago, and it had 63,000 miles on the odometer - presently 99,000). Thanks for posting the thread Cindy! [IMG] [IMG]

Is it the more efficient vehicles that are anti-American, or the interfaith effort to encourage the automakers to, well, make them?

I don't get it either way.

I think it's just one more way to commercialize the name of Jesus, to remove the signifcance of it, to associate it any other way then the Son of God, Savior. I don't care about cars, anti americanism, global warming, not as far as the name of Jesus is concerned.

    So, the real question is:
    What
    Would
    Jerry
    Drive?

As far as the environment goes: Christians should lead the way in envioronmental stewardship (without becoming "wackos" or worshipers of "Mother Earth").

As far as what Jerry, or any other American wants to drive: interesting that those who tend to push infanticide ("reproductive rights") and other such things have no problem going after the "freedoms" of those who want to drive SUVs. Why are SUVs and the tobacco companies "fair game" for them? And now they are even going after fast-food companies for not offering "nutritious" meals. Crazy! BTW, it isn't just Democrats, but Republicans as well. "Big government" is an awful monster!

So, now that I have given this little soapbox sermonette, let me close with this:

Jesus' preferred mode of travel: walking, sailing. He either walked or took a boat. Nothing else. [IMG]

True, true, Rev. G. But I think He would drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee! (It would come in handy for hauling lumber.) :D

Can you really haul lumber in those things? I think he'd need a REAL truck! [IMG] :D
