PHONE NUMBER IN 'BRUCE ALMIGHTY' BELONGS TO FLORIDA WOMAN
    (Pinellas Park, Florida-AP) -- A Florida woman says she's
getting tired of taking calls for God. Dawn Jenkins says her cell
phone number is the same as the one used in the new comedy "Bruce
Almighty," in which Jim Carrey plays a man who receives the
    powers of God.
In the movie, God tries to reach Carrey's character by
leaving a phone number on his pager. But instead of the generic
5-5-5 prefix used by most films, the number in this movie is one
    that's actually in service.
Jenkins says she's been getting about 20 calls an hour --
with callers asking for God and hanging up. She tells the St.
Petersburg Times she's thinking of hiring a lawyer.
The number featured in "Bruce Almighty" also matches the
number of a South Carolina woman -- as well as the number for a
call center for a group of Colorado talk-radio stations.

I heard a report recently that the traditional dummy "555" exchange has now been put into service so that media people don't really have that to choose from anymore.

She should set up an answering machine:

Hello, this is God. I'm watching you at the moment. You don't have to leave your number; I know it already. And I know what you want.
    Have a good day.

I would imagine the pay off on a law suit for this would be enormous. You would think that a movie with this big a budget could have afforded to call the number to see if it belonged to anybody before including it in the movie. But mistakes happen. What a nuisance. for these people.

Actually, in order to win a suit, you'd have to prove two things: malice (the number was not given out maliciously), and damages (aside from inconvenience, there's probably not a significant amount of damages to warrant anything besides a small claims case).

I had also heard that a chuch in another state had the same number, which belonged to its prison ministry. Go figure

BTW - does anyone remember the song: 867-5309 Jenny???

I think they should have actually used a number that they owned, and either staffed it or equipped it with a voicemail system in loco Dei.

Hmmm, that would involve giving all ten digits. We have ten digit local dialing here in the Metroplex, but is it common in other parts of the country?

(When I lived in rural West Texas we had 5 digit dialing!)

    Georgia has ten digit dialing.

Here in Alabama, we have a big ol' box with a crank hanging on the wall, and you shout into the mouthpiece.

"Sara!! Sara!! Get me Barney!!" ;)

All the stuff about the phone number aside, what do you think about the movie in general? I have seen the trailers for it on tv. Innocent fun? blasphemy? irreverant? frivolous disregard for something that should be taken a little more seriously?

This is the 21st century. Do we still "dial" numbers?

In the place where they still had five-digit dialing for calls within the county (the last number of the three digit prefix plus the last four numbers), they still didn't have touch-tone service available. (It was a GTE network as I remember.)

I lived in the "big" city of McCulloch County (Brady, Texas), which had about 6,000 residents. There wasn't much else in the county except prairie and wildlife.

NOTE: I just checked up on Brady's phone system on the Chamber of Commerce site and they seem to have digital switching service available -- including such fancy features as call-waiting, 3-way calling, and caller ID! It seems Brady has finally caught up to the 1980s!

If I am not mistaken, they renamed this movie. I saw an ad a long time ago and it was first called God, Almighty. I think one needs to be very careful when trying to portray God. Especially when the film contains the filth it does. I kind of thought blasphemy at first, but maybe I was being too harsh?

I know three people who have seen it. One of them an elderly woman that I attend church with. She highly recommended it. All the people I know who have seen it have recommended it.

I had heard that working titles were "God Almighty" and "Great God Amlighty", but that the final title, "Bruce Almighty" was chosen because it's about Bruce, not about God. Note, however, I can't confirm that info, so right now it's officially heresay ;)

With all respect, you've already posted this in another topic, where it's been responded to.

You haven't seen the movie, so I don't see the reason to make such a harsh judgement about it.

The way I reead Jim Carrey's statement, he's not a Jesus freak, but he believes in God. A good majority of us on the board could probably say the same thing about us.

I take it your're not a Mick Jagger fan. Additionally, I have Vertical Horizon in my CD player right now. What's "ungodly" about them? I'm willing to bet you've never even heard of Vertical Horison until you read it in this text you took from another site. And Patty LaBelle? Ungodly? C'mon!!!!
