Norton and Outlook Express

Rob, did you go into Tools, Internet Options, Programs and make sure Outlook Express is there for E-mail?

We had to reset ours after loading Norton one time.

But the security software should help somewhat, Look OUT can still propagate viruses without you opening them. There are plenty of free mail tools that will do the trick, as long as all you do with Outlook is mail.

 

A couple of recommendations concerning Outlook Express:

I'd strongly recommend turning off the preview pane. It's a pain to not have it, but you grow used to having to double-click to see your messages and it keeps OE from loading a message automatically.

The second thing you can do once you've done the above, is when you get a suspicious email, you can right-click it and choose (I think it's) "Properties" and so on until you get to the option to see message source: this shows the raw contents of the email with unprocessed HTML and any attachments if present (in encoded form). However, you should be able to tell if it is a junk email message without having to really "open" it, plus you can see the originating IP address in the header information for tracking purposes.

Anyways, I use Thunderbird 0.5 now for my email and I am happy with it (it's not perfect--yet--but it might be someday). I'd recommend looking into it.

Do you mean to set the options to go straight to the inbox?

Oops. No, let me clarify:

Go to your inbox first, then choose View | Layout from the menu bar, and uncheck Preview Pane (at least, that's how you do it for my version of Outlook Express).

superdave: I think I have heard of Evolution awhile back, but I don't know anything about it. Will it ever be ported to Windows?

 

I cannot remember HOW or WHERE I set my email settings to not automatically show the full incoming messages. I used to get many porn emails until I blocked enough senders and created enough screens.... Ug! Certainly don't want my boys seeing that filth.

I need the info for hubby too. We both have XP but they're very different!

Ported to windows, hmmm, probably not, I am not sure why that would happen, its open source for Linux, and Sun has taken the open source and customized it for Java Desktop System. It also has plug ins to handle syncing with Palm OS, since Palm doesn't have a Linux client yet.

Although Sun did just sign that big agreement with the Evil Empire...you never know what might happen in the interest of interoperability. Microsloth is very scared about the rise of Linux
