Norton Antivirus vs. Windows OneCare

    After reading the suggestions at this site: http://www.thenationsforchrist.com/html/guide.html , I've been thinking about getting rid of Norton Antivirus and getting Windows OneCare.

    Anybody switched from one to the other and had any better (or worse) results, or problems?

    I have no experience with OneCare but I hate Norton.

    My personal choice is to get a Mac because then you don't have to worry about it at all.

    Do you have to stick with Windows?

    We use CA Etrust where I work and it has been very reliable.

    No, I don't have to stick with Windows, but I'm just not in a position where I can afford to get a new computer right now. Also, I guess I'd be a little nervous switching to a Mac since I've always used Windows and know absolutely nothing about a Mac. Thanks.

    I have a better idea.....Dump Windoze and switch to a Mac. Made the switch 2 years ago and have never looked back. Zero spyware and Virus'.

    I mustn't get out much, haven't heard of OneCare until now. AVG (the free program exscentric mentions) is good. Avast is another solid free anti-virus program.


    [a-batch-of-lies-and-a-flame-but-fun] No need to switch to apple, it's fans just promote it because they get discount on next machine if manage to get enough Windows users to switch. Eventually it will just fade away. [/a-batch-of-lies-and-a-flame-but-fun]

    I'm not opposed to buying a Mac.....have only heard good things about them.....but it's just that I can't go out and buy a new computer right now. Thanks for the advice, though.

    I just suggested that when you are in the market to buy one again, take a look at one and see if it will meet your needs.

    I will, thanks. And like Pete, I had never even heard of Windows OneCare until a couple of days ago. That's why I was wondering if anyone here could tell me how it compares to Norton Antivirus.

    I renewed my Norton Anti-Virus earlier this year and lost the use of my e-mail, along with a few other problems. My internet provider that Norton was having a lot of problems, and I believe them....Once my two years is up...Norton is gone,,,,,,,,but it isn't gone,,,,apparently you can't even delete the whole program.....guess I will be due for a new computer,,or glory,,by then..

    I think one care is new, I am sure we will be getting it at work because we subscribe wo MSDN so we get all of the new MS stuff.
    I will have to check it out sometime.

    I believe its going hand in hand with the new Vista platform. I read some on it before its "official" release & most of what i read was negative. Course can't say much for Nortons either. I use the AVG Free & have no problems on Win.2000Pro. I believe it was on PC World awhile back that an article was saying it wasn't all it was hyped up to be, that MS put it up as new & innovative & it was a bunch of different security programs just thrown together. They're tryin to get a piece of the virus/spyware action away from the Nortons & McFees & the others. They're greediness is what has lead to so many GOOD, free programs being offered.

    Norton IS a virus! lol
    Occasionaly I have to uninstall Norton for customers at work and it is always a pain. Ever since the '04 version.

    If you need to look for a new computer, check out the Mac Mini
    That is what I am on right now and it is great.
    I have never had a Virus in 4 years on a Mac :)

    Ignore the Mac-ites... don't be pulled over to the dark side. :) The only reason they don't suffer with viruses is because there is not enough Mac users to meet the virus maker's ego. :)

    Someone mentioned Grisoft which supply a very good free anti-virus program. I have used it for years and it has never failed me.

    Windows OneCare is good at everything except anti-virus. :) I experimented with it over the past few weeks and it let through a pretty nasty virus which caused all manner of problems. If they can get the anti-virus element sorted I would use it. I liked the back up feature and its general tune up ability.

    Right now I am using Trend Micro which seems to be doing a great job.

    Actually viruses are not the reason that I use a mac, but it has been the reason for me to recommend others.

    OK, step back and think about this...

    Viruses exploit weaknesses in an operating system (Macs have them, as well, but as was said there's not enough Mac users to make virus making for them worthwhile).

    Microsoft made Windows with all these weaknesses.

    now, M$ wants to sell you something to protect you from the weaknesses of their own product.

    Anyone else see something wrong with this picture?

    TrendMicro is opne of the top a/v on the market. Nod32 is the top dog, however.

    I use CA's ezTrust. They are still offering a one year free trial of their antivirus:

    I have used AVG for a few years now and love the job it's doing. It's a great cost... FREE.
