Given our recent discussion re: The Dixie Chicks and politics, some may find this interesting. I just picked up the Chicks latest album, Taking the Long Way, which includes the song, "Not Ready to Make Nice". It is obvious the song is inspired by the real controversy that Natalie Maines' words provoked. Looks like they have the courage of their convictions. Here are the lyrics to:

    Not Ready to Make Nice
    by The Dixie Chicks

    Forgive, sounds good.
Forget, I'm not sure I could.
    They say time heals everything,
    But I'm still waiting

    I'm through, with doubt,
There's nothing left for me to figure out,
I've paid a price, and i'll keep paying

I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
    I'm still mad as h***
    And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
    I probably wouldn't if I could
    Cause I'm mad as h***
Can't bring myself to do what it is
    You think I should

    I know you said
Why can't you just get over it,
It turned my whole world around
and i kind of like it

I made by bed, and I sleep like a baby,
With no regrets and I don't mind saying,
    It's a sad sad story
That a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger.
    And how in the world
Can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Saying that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
    I'm still mad as h***
    And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
    I probably wouldn't if I could
    Cause I'm mad as h***
Can't bring myself to do what it is
    You think I should

I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
    I'm still mad as h***
    And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
    I probably wouldn't if I could
    Cause I'm mad as h***
Can't bring myself to do what it is
    You think I should

    Forgive, sounds good.
Forget, I'm not sure I could.
    They say time heals everything,
    But I'm still waiting

Another cut on the album, "Lubbock or Leave It" gives a look into their experience with churches in Lubbock. Quite an insight. Lyrics to the first verse.

    Dust bowl, Bible belt
    Got more churches than trees
Raise me, praise me, couldn't save me
Couldn't keep me on my knees
Oh, boy, rave on down loop 289
That'll be the day you see me back
    In this fool's paradise

    Temptation's strong
    (Salvation's gone)
    I'm on my way
    To hell's half acre
    How will I ever
    How will I ever
    Get to heaven now

Yep. I understand they are really popular in Europe, but are doing very poorly here in America. I am glad they are being held responsible for their stupidity by the American Consumers. I do, however, respect them for being willing to accept the consequences of their convictions no matter the cost.

I heard the last big concert they gave only sold about half of the tickets and their newest album can be bought real cheap - under 10 bucks.

Their album has done quite well. It is still the top album on the Billboard country chart and number 2 on the Billboard overall Top 200 chart.

As cheap as they are selling the album, coupled with all the free advertising they got from their friends in the "old media", it's no wonder they are selling a couple copies of their album.

It cost me more than that. More like $16.99 + tax on sale at Borders.

    "Traveling Soldier"

Politics aside, "Traveling Soldier", basically a bluegrass style song, is one of my favorites. Here is a live performance of it:

If the Dixie Chicks would put out a strictly bluegrass album, I would buy it. Their harmonies are great.
