Not saved if you don't understand the Bible?

If that were true why did anyone ever bother translating it out of Hebrew and Greek?

 

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Don't believe it. We never stop learning and gaining new understanding in our Christian walk and study of the Scriptures. Ask any old saint if he completely understands all that is in the Bible, and they will admit that they are still learning and growing.

The ironic thing is that it sounds like your sunday school teacher has little understanding of the Bible.

Ask her if it is possable for people who have never learned to read to be saved?

Actually, its sad that one 'teaches' a class and promotes such error.
Salvation is known by a changed heart and life and the fruit being evident, which in turn of course does cause hunger to know the Lord and His Word better!

That bears out Jer 29:13 Seek me and ye shall find me when you search for me with all your heart!
We never will know and understand the whole bible, but then we will never stop reading, studying, and praying for further light either!

I don't know about Bob Jones and such, but I do know that it is Jesus who saves and not an intellectual knowledge of or understanding of the Bible! A person who is saved is able to begin to understand MORE of the Bible, but I doubt any of us will ever be at the point -- at least short of heaven -- where we can say we understand all of it!

A person who is saved will find themselves hungry for Bible, and want to know it more and more. But he or she can be quite nicely saved before understanding it, certainly!

 

Not at all! Thats a big problem with thinking your search stops at salvation!

All of our life, everafter we are to seek and search for His truth, to know Him better, to progressively become more Christlike!
Just like it says in Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he that comes to Him must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him!

Believers must always diligently seek Him, to be more like Him!

What's their definition of "understand"? There are (in my opinion) so many figurative symbolic things in the bible that nobody could ever understand all of it, and even if they thought they did, there would be other scholars who disagree with certain aspects because they think it means something else.

 

Everyone learns and grows at a different rate, and the same Holy Spirit teaches each one. Sometimes those who are gifted teachers think it comes so easy to them to learn the bible that it should to anyone, to the neglect of the fact it isn't them learning, it is the Holy Spirit teaching. No one understand the whole bible, and no one will, but God reveals Himself through those scriptures to those who are His, one step at a time. So your teacher shouldn't count anyone out yet.

 

I think most will tell you that the more they understand the more they realize they don't know.

 

The statement made by your SS teacher is about the dumbest I've ever seen posted on the BB, and that is saying a lot! Is she saying that she understands the Triune God? How about Jesus who was fully God and fully man? I believe them, but I assure you I don't understand them.

And frankly, your point of agreement with her on understanding salvation isn't exactly the sharpest splinter I've ever rammed into my finger, either, although I do hope you don't take that as an insult or put-down.

The many threads on this board on Calvinism and Arminianism should be all the evidence one would ever need to know that we don't undertand all there is to know about salvation. While I understand absolutely that I am saved, I do not pretend to understand all there is to know about the subject of salvation. Do you?? And I would hope or expect that most others on this board would agree with me on this.

Here's a suggestion, for free. Give your teacher this one question pop quiz with these exact words, and see what is the response. The question is -

"What must I do to be saved?''

Since that is a Biblical question and one that has the specific question and answer in Acts 16:30-31, if she answers you in any other way than "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou (you) shall (will) be saved...", she will have flunked the quiz. Hence, she does not know what she is talking about, on this subject. And that is about as basic as you can get.
