The death penalty needs to be done in a swift manner.

Of course, I am for public execution, that all might see what this kind of crime gets you.

    Anyone for pick-axe?

Absolutely not. He should be sentenced to life in prison without parole, and kept in a small cell for the rest of his life, but he should not be killed. I cannot see how believers of Jesus Christ could be for the death penalty, while being upset at abortion. Life is life, and it is not ours to take away.

Life is not MINE to take away because I am not the government.

However, God specifically gave Noah the command to exercise capital punishment.

    Moses was given the command.

    Christ affirmed capital punishment.

Paul taught that the capital punishment was one of the roles of the government.

Sorry Scott, I will just have to agree with all of them on this one.

I cannot see how Paul affirmed capital punishment (and I assume you are using Romans 13 here. I see where Paul affirms punishment for crime, but killing criminals goes outside what is plainly written.

I also fail to see how Christ affirmed capital punishment. Scriptures?

What else would a sword be used for?? The government does not "Bear the sword" in vain. They are ministers of God. Seems what is plainly written affirms capital punishment.

Capital punishment shows that we value human life. Abortion is sin because it is the taking of an innocent life. Capital punishment is ordained by God because it shows the value of human life. It is instituted because God made man in his own image (Gen 9:6). To murder is to stamp out the image of God, something God takes very seriously, instituting the penalty of a life for a life.

Can not a sword also refer to any kind of punishment or judgment? Can machaira not refer to any type of judicial punishment?

But how would you say that the New Covenant backs this up?

I see no use for public executions. They used to make a carnaval spectical out of it, take the kids to see. A person has to be sick to want to watch people die.

Wanting to watch it and it being good for society don't go hand in hand. People would be alot let inclined to do the same thing if they saw the end result.

The question is, Can it refer to less than capital punishment?? Why would you say "sword" if you meant "imprisonment"? There is a clear word for that. To use the word "sword" seems very strong, and intentionally so.

Because the command of Gen 9:6 predates the Mosaic Law and the one thing that has not changed is that man is still in the image of God. I use the "New Covenant" loosely here. Technically, the new Covenant refers to God's restoration of Israel to the land as specified in Jer 31. But with regards to the NT way of life in the church, the government is still the institution of God for good. That hasn't changed. Man's life is still valuable and such value needs to be shown by the methods that God ordained. When we use capital punishment, we send a message that life is worth something.

It is interesting to see the philosphy of people today. In some matters, such as tobacco, they will insist on punishments that are much larger than "crimes." (I put "crimes" in quotation marks because there was no law broken and addiction was always voluntary). People have been given millions of dollars when the company was not responsible much if at all. But in the case of real crime (where life or personal mobility or security is harmed), then we insist on punishment that is far less than the crimes warrant. We need to get this issue straightened out.

Some people just love to hate. Yes, I think if some societies like the USA, China and a few Muslim countries should make viewing the capital punishment mandatory. Don't be such cowards and face the music. It won't stop crime, as proved by history, but it might change your mind about taking another life. If capital punishment is biblical, then I have been reading the wrong bibles.

The USA is the LAST of the civilized western world to insist on killing people. Sad, sad, sad.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I gave four instances as to why capital punishment is biblical.

    Noah
    Moses
    Christ
    Paul

    Don't dismiss them so lightly.

Actually it will. There have been many murderers who have been released from prison to murder again. There has never been a murderer who has been executed ever murder again.

More likely just reading it wrongly. That the Bible commands capital punishment cannot be doubted. It is clearly there. What is sad, sad, sad (to use your words) is that some are so opposed to what Scripture declares to be the will of God.

Liberals are liberals are liberals. That's what my daddy used to say.

Liberal in theology will lead to liberal in political views methink.

There is not much more of a clear teaching in Scripture than capital punishment by GOVERNMENT. Paul fell prey to it, but did not resist.

We think we are "kind" by deferring justice to some sort of lesser punishment. But certainly not in a public spectacle.

When any man dies it does affect us all, even the most vicious and heinous murderer. Let's be gracious in this, with swift and certain punishment.

And the question is also begged, just because Paul said that we should submit to the goverment in this area, does this mean that capital punishment is somehow better than life imprisonment or other punishments, according to the NT?

Slavery can also be said to be "Biblical".

That doesn't make it the "best" thing to do!

Don't you all get it, this guy was already wanting death in connection with his cause. He will twist this in his mind to where he will die in the work of Allah so he can go to his virgins. We are in effect, doing exactly what he is dreaming and desiring. We are fulfilling his every spiritual and physical desire. We need to re-examine who gets what out of the death of a muslim terrorist when they land in our streets and put on trial.

I vote we send him to Federal Prison for life. Its cheaper, easier and is a real form of punishment.

What a murderer of any faith thinks he wants has nothing at all to do with it.

God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. In Genesis 9, long before the Ten Commandments were written in stone BY HIM, God commanded the death penalty for murder and gave the reason why: because man is made in the image of God.

We are still made in the image of God.

    God is still the same.

The death command still stands. It is out of respect for life -- the life of the murdered and the Life in God -- that we obey, not because we 'feel' it is right or wrong.

Obedience is obedience. Eve felt differently, too....

Satan has only ever had to use one temptation (in two steps) with the human race:

    1. Did God REALLY say???.....

    2. Think for yourself -- what do you feel is right?

Those against the death penalty are falling for that temptation all over again.

Yes, God really said it. And no, when He really said it, we are NOT invited to reconsider via our own logic and emotions.

His death should be swift (it won't be -- appeals drag on for years), and humane.

How are we fulfilling his spiritual desire? I don't see how we are unless the virgins are real. His physical desire may be to die a martyr and for some he will. To others, his death will show that you can not go around shooting people at random and get "3 hots and cot", free medical-at least to him, free legal-for anything he wants to sue over, free education-at least to him, and other things provided at tax payers expense for the rest of his life.

How is federal prison cheaper and easier as a form of punishment then the death penalty?

Cheaper? What economic scale are you using?

Okay, feeding, housing, clothing, and guarding a guy for the rest of his life is cheaper than the following:

    a bullet in the head
    a rope
    an axe
    a butterknife
a constant playing of Michael W. Smith music

    verrrrrrrry unlikely Post-it.

Okay, what about the families of victims?

They get to pay more than once when a murderer is NOT executed.

    1. The loss of their loved one
    2. Their tax dollars to support him

It is a slap in the face saying that the life of the murderer is important but not the life of the victim.
