Obama: Give the man a break, or, a salute?

Today, while existing Marine 1, Obama with a cup of coffee in his hand failed to return a "Crisp salute" to the marines standing at the foot of the stairs. Here is the link, you tell me if he deserves criticism for the way he responded to the Marines who saluted him?

He's not a veteran so he doesn't know the tradition, protocol or esprit de corps involved.

The thing is, even when George W Bush offered a salute while holding his dog, he at least held the dog with his left hand while saluting. It might not have been a perfectly crisp salute, but it was better than this. Obama could've easily moved his coffee cup to his left hand, but instead couldn't be bothered.

Technically no but he needs to understand it is a pretty simple sign of respect. I've defended him on other things but he should know better in this case.

As someone who has worked on security details for Bush Sr., Dukakas, and the Commandant of the Marine Corps I can tell you that it is not required in the sense that there is some form of penalty for him if he does not. However, when the man who is directly providing your personal security renders a salute according to regulations, and the President fails or refuses to do so....or to do it in a cavalier manner, it is understood as a personal slight and a huge sign of disprespect. Much in the same way that a failure of the security detail to salute the President would.


The only exception would be in a combat zone where there is no saluting only the appropriate verbal greeting.

If that were me, while in the Army ...

If I were to salute a superior officer, while in the army [Fort Ord] with anything but the four fingers and thumb attached to the flesh of my hand, I would have had a new anal opening drilled into my butt area and been told to do a few hundred push-ups. I may have also been written up, and lost some monthly pay from an Article 15.

This guy does not care for the men and women who bravely serve this nation. His concerns are clearly seen in the way he has left a Marine to rot in the Tijuana Jail.

He is an embarrassment, and the only good that could have come out of the "latte salute" would be for the lid of latte to have popped off, spilling some of the expensive coffee on his new, pressed suit!
