President Barack Obama is sending 275 U.S. troops to Iraq to "provide support and security for U.S. personnel and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad" in the wake of territorial gains made by the jihadist group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS.)
Obama announced the decision in a letter Monday sent to Speaker of the House John Boehner and President Pro Tempore of the Senate Patrick Leahy in which he notified them of the deployment as required by the War Powers Resolution.

"Starting on June 15, 2014, up to approximately 275 U.S. Armed Forces personnel are deploying to Iraq to provide support and security for U.S. personnel and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad," wrote Obama. "This force is deploying for the purpose of protecting U.S. citizens and property, if necessary, and is equipped for combat. This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed."

Primarily embassy security and evac logistics. Big deal.

Here is the big deal:

".. Is equipped for combat. This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed."

Obama's weakness in foreign policy is being tested by ISIS and will be tested further. If they attack the embassy we will be back at war in Iraq.

Yep, it is just the beginning.

It's gotta be for evac purposes. No way is Obama going to build up forces again and he shouldn't. It is too late, he screwed it up when he pulled out the force for good, now the dark force is moving back in. Obama legacy will be a terrible one.

Flashback!

PREDICTION: Breaking up the army after Saddam Hussein's fall could haunt Iraq

While not as big as what it had been prior to the 1991 Gulf War, Iraq's military under Saddam Hussein boasted an estimated 430,000 soldiers and another 400,000 personnel in paramilitary units and security services when U.S.-led troops invaded in spring 2003.

Still, the Iraqis proved no match for coalition forces.

After the military was overrun, it was dissolved -- along with Iraq's defense and information ministries -- by Paul Bremer, the top U.S. civilian administrator in Iraq.

That left hundreds of thousands of troops suddenly out of work. Those with ranks of colonel and above -- who knew the most about strategy, tactics and more -- were hit even harder, as they weren't entitled to severance packages and couldn't work for the new Iraqi government.

Then they had to go somewhere.

According to Fawaz Gerges, a professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science, "hundreds, if not thousands, of skilled officers of Saddam Hussein's ... joined ISIS."

That means this militant force -- even as it is supplemented by foreign fighters -- is trained and knows Iraq well. And its leaders may be more organized, strategically savvy and adept at fighting than some in Iraq's current military.

"(This) has allowed ISIS to basically have skills, to have motivation, to have command and control," Gerges told CNN. "It's a mini-army fighting both in Iraq and Syria."

And let's not forget Washington (democrats AND republicans) have been funding and arming these "militants" in Libya and Syria after Libya was handed to them on a platter with the help of NATO.

As amateurish as his foreign policy is, who can tell what the plan (if he has one) is?

Obama's foreign policy amounts to implementing the "recommendations" the bankers and corporations make through all their "think tanks" like, Brookings, Heritage, CFR, and the Tri Laterals and of course AIPAC to name a few.

The foreign policy of the United States is pretty much a "done deal" by the time the POTUS gets a chance to see it.

If you want to see the plan for yourself all ya gotta do is read "The Grand Chessboard" and "Which Path To Persia".

Just an empty gesture for political purposes.

Not a chance. Obama has done everything he can to make sure this insurgency is successful.

He will throw in the towel very quickly.

It is a big deal to me and a lot of Americans.
Me too, but he isn't doing it for the right reasons, and he shouldn't have to do it at all. He should have left force-in-place for just this eventuality, with a secondary mission to train Iraqi security forces. He's incompetent.

That is "no big deal." He's feeling the heat and making a superfluous gesture. Too little, too late, too ineffective.
Or Obama will just leave them there to die with no help.
Which is the most likely outcome.
Just an empty gesture for political purposes.
Exactly. Sad as it is to say.
