Also, Obama reported donations to charity as less than 6%. Our President is a opportunist who is playing into the wealth envy of the general population. As bad as Obama's giving to charity is, look at our Vice President. I did a study about 7 years ago on giving to charity, so many of our liberal friends are like the ones above. Not that conservatives were so great but they were a lot better than their liberal friends. If I recall correctly the conservatives gave more to people such as feeding and so on, while our liberal friends seem to give more to the arts and such, much less to the ones in need.

Does a person ever have enough money? Enough in what way? Let's say a person has enough money that they will never have to worry about running out during their lifetime. Would that be enough?

Some years ago I was offered a job with a huge increase in salary over what I was earning. However, the new job would have meant I would be very limited in time for anything other than work.

I decided that for me, time was more important than additional money and I turned down the job.

Each of us has a limited amount of time. Time cannot be earned. Time cannot be set aside for a future date. To me the quality of my time left is more important than money.

How about you?

I think the context of that is what he later says "fulfilling the core responsibilities to the financial system, to help grow the economy".
In other words, while in the American Way, there may be no limit as to how much you can make, however, in the real system, there is only a limited amount of money in "the financial system", so if some take it all, then there won't be any left for you either. (Of course, people actually blame those lower than them for this, but that's another story).
Also, the fact, that not all of it is even legitimately earned. As we see in the financial scandals; a lot of it is gained by dirty dealing. that is aprt of what the financial reform is aimed at.

Though I do believe that book, speaking, etc. deals are ridiculous. But that's apart of what the same American Way has become as well. I guess people like him feel he is just one person, and he is talking about whole industries making too much, rather than individuals. (another thing to keep in mind. It's indistries draining the economy; not individuals). But it is quite extravagant.

And you would have seen that the speech was linked in the very first sentence of that article.

I've listened to the audio of this speech (this comment isn't in the pre-released text of the speech) and to me it sounds like he is attempting to make a joke. You can tell by the tone of his voice when he makes this comment. It's a poor joke and not at all appropriate given the context it was given in.

No and for a number of reasons, the primary one being it would kill incentive, innovation and creativity.

I was not saying the government should limit how much a person makes. I was asking is there a point where a person can say, "I have enough."

I am not trying to defend Obama on this ... I am simply raising the question that I believe each person should consider for themselves.

Do I have enough?
What is more important to me for the rest of my life, quality time or money?

For my spouse and I we decided that quality time is more important to us than more money.

Here is a short piece on my decision to retire that I wrote for a memoir writing class I am taking at the senior center.

“There is more to life than walking these hallways or running an engineering library. There are places I want to go, sites I want to see and things I want to do. It is time to retire. There is a whole ‘other’ world out there beyond these corporate walls.”



I had been thinking these thoughts for several years and now, 88 days before my 55th birthday I made my decision. I rolled a company memo sheet into my IBM selectric typewriter and typed and forwarded to my boss a short memo announcing my retirement on February 28th, 1995. The company retirement plan maxed out at age 62 and 25 years seniority. I had the 25 years and, sure, I would take a hit by retiring before I was 62 years old. So what? We would not starve. I had reached a point in my life where I considered time more important than money. Time could not be earned or saved for a later day. I, like all humans, had only so much time to live and, to me, the quality of the time left was of primary importance.

Looking back I made the right decision. There is a whole ‘other’ world outside the corporate walls and for me it has been the best world of my life.
