Obama says health care changes must come this year

May 28 06:52 PM US/Eastern
By PHILIP ELLIOTT
Associated Press Writer

President Barack Obama warned Thursday that if Congress doesn't deliver health care legislation by the end of the year, the opportunity will be lost, a plea to political supporters to pressure lawmakers to act. "If we don't get it done this year, we're not going to get it done," Obama told supporters by phone as he flew home on Air Force One from a West Coast fundraising trip.

Before Americans wake up to the cost of socialism.

"If we don't get it done this year, we're not going to get it done," Obama told supporters...

I would say that he is right about this. The consequences of his reckless spending will "come home to roost" and no one in their right mind will want to take on the additional massive debt that would be incurred by his plans for our health system.

Obama needs to get his plan implemented before the kool-aid wears off.

Obama is nothing, if not consistent.

Bush and his folk pulled this stunt, too: "Ohmygosh, we gotta do something, today!! If we don't, we'll all die...or if not die, we'll all be so bad off that will likely become cannibals."

The R's pulled that garbage too, with the stimulus giveaway and the "bailout" of the People's Car Companies/UAW Auxiliary (formerly GM & Chrysler).

People with functioning brain stems (or rudimentary sense of morals) would slow down and deliberately think through major spending. Not our "leaders." They move ahead, almost at a panicked pace. They lie to us...essentially saying, "We don't have time to mull this over. If we don't all do this today, we will die of starvation in 24 hours."

What a sad bunch of losers we've given control of our country to.

There is no doubt we need healthcare reform. In my view, it is more important than saving GM. The fact that tens of millions of us are without insurance is why your insurance gets billed $80 for a Tylenol when you are hospitalized. We are paying for it already. Let's fix it.

Why don't you have health insurance?

I paid for my son's insurance for a couple of years - he is in his mid twenties.

It cost $50 per month.

Not a big deal.

Yeah...$50/mo when you are in your twenties. Check out when you are in your late 50s.

So again... why don't you have health insurance?

I assume that you have a home - and manage to pay homeowners insurance.

I assume that you have a car - and manage to pay auto insurance.

You probably have money for food, clothes, a television, stove, refridgerator, lawn mower, and who knows what else.

Why no health insurance?

My personal financial situation is of no concern to you. But let me give you some reasons people are without insurance.

Laid off by employer

Working, but as a contractor and no money left after food and shelter

There are many other reasons that not everyone is as fortunate as you. Also, many folks work for companies that have a very high deductible and inadequate insurance plan.

I am glad your life situation is going well. I have compassion for those who are not as fortunate. It also doesn't change the fact that we all pay for uninsured folks' healthcare via higher prices. They also wait until it is an emergency, which drives costs up. People put off preventative care, and even end up dying over it.

We already pay for it...let's make it work.

My son had insurance for a whlie, $30. a week, the other one paid $70 every two weeks(not family insurance, but them only). Most people don't have that. We are even lower income then our sons(thanksfully it's us nto them), my husband has no insurance, and if he needs help we pay for all of it ourselves, we're in debt now, we couldn't get any help, now we were told the other day we had to pay over $400. within the next 2 months, we don't have it unless we don't buy food.
but obama wants to tax us so we can give everyone else health care. if we take care of ourselves, other should too, get a job, our income is under $300. a week, but no one helps us, ever, even when our electric was shut off.

Donna, this is a prime example of why we need universal healthcare. You should not have to make the choice between food and medical care. Food is an everyday, ongoing expense. Medical issues can crop up suddenly and unexpectedly, putting you in the position of getting your family member needed care (if you can afford it) or eating. Many folks have to choose between even prescriptions and food.

The entire model of tying medical care to your employment is flawed. We need to be one big, insurable group. The current system is inefficient, costly, and leaves people out. We can do better.

And what would your one big plan include?

Unlimited care for everyone on demand?

Would one be allowed to purchase out of pocket medical services not included on your one big plan?

Would abortion be covered on your one big plan?

Would viagra and the like be covered?

Sex change operations?

Liposuction?

Tummy tucks?

Implants?

Hair transplants?

we do not believe in others taking care of us, we take care of us. nor do we wish to pay even more taxes to pay for peoples viagra, let others also take care of themselves. If we had to pay more taxes for this, we'd again have to chose food or not.

This is a prime example of voting against your own self interest. Do you have your own police and fire departments? Do you build your own roads? Do you have your own personal military to secure your liberty? Some things are better done as a group than "every man (or woman) for themself".

Do you really think that sex changes are the cause of out of control healthcare costs?

I would prefer to see folks have to wait a few weeks for non-critical care to insure all get the basics covered. There is not one person who has suggested covering cosmetic surgery in a national plan. These are not covered under private insurance plans today either.

Obama is nothing! [Stop right there.]

Bush will have several years to regret allowing Paulson to panic him into TARP.

If "bho" is able to get his health reform none of us will have health care and euthanasia will follow. After all if the unborn are worthless what gives the old folks any value?

However, government--time and time again--has proven itself to be monumentally inefficient.

Look at FEMA's response to disasters. We want that entity in charge?
Look at the train wreck known as Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital. We want them in charge?
We want paragons of virtue such as Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, and Dick Durbin in charge?
We want the "family values" champions such as Larry Craig in charge?

No thanks. Does healthcare need fixing? Yes...but I'm firmly convinced government would mess it up worse.

Finally...If you value individual freedom, then it would seem you would strenuously oppose government healthcare. You see, when I pay for your healthcare, then I can tell you, under the guise of "health," what chips to eat (or not), what car to drive, and how much water you're required to drink. MP, you value freedom...that is obvious from your posts. If we have government healthcare, kiss it goodbye. On second thought, kissing spreads germs. Just wave goodbye to them. :wavey:

health Care cannot be bundled under the government management. There are not enough taxes available to collect to make this happen. Once government gets involved in anything the costs rise dramatically. Social health care has failed every where it has been tried. There are no success stories.

What is the source of the supposed savings?

You say that the current system leaves people out - so that means your one big plan would distribute more health care giving.

How is that to be paid for?

You talk about out of control health care costs - but it seems to me that the only people complaining about health care costs aren't really paying anyway.

You are unwilling or unable to pay for medical insurance - so how much are you willing to pay for your one big health care plan?

Or are you leaving that to the rest of us to pay for you?

You know what they say happens when you assume? You just did it to yourself. You have no clue about what you are speaking of.

There are only three options here:

You have medical insurance

You don't because you can't afford to pay for it

You don't because you are not willing to pay for it

What's the big assumption here?

BTW - still waiting to hear how your one big plan saves money.

You skipped right over that part.
