I still have XP auto updates off, no software firewall, and no virus scanner. I haven't been hacked and I have yet to get a virus :). But if I do, it's no big deal. Acronis has my back.

Sorry Ulsterman, you are my friend... but you are also a Mac user.

If Macs are ever popular enough to be interesting to hackers, and if anything of any worth can ever be gained by hacking a Mac, I am sure holes will be found there also. :)

Turn about is fair play... The first article is titled: "
Mac users 'too smug' over security" :)

P.S. Looking forward to your next trip to God's country so we can play Risk!

    Um, yeah... whatever.

Macs are becoming more popular everyday, especially since, for high-end users, they are actually cheaper than their PC-clone counterparts (see http://www.systemshootouts.org/shootouts/desktop/2006/0809_dt3200.html and http://theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=33576 for example).

That article is about smugness and taking sensible precautions, not inherent weaknesses in Mac OS X.

Some choice quotes from the article you cite:

Very true. I don't know any Mac user who doesn't use the built-in firewall and install the security updates in a timely fashion. And yes, because of the way Mac OS X handles user accounts and security, means that viruses are unlikely.

That's true. The risk is very low, but no one should assume it can't happen. But here's the real issue: what operating system do you want to run? The one that we know gets hacked every day and spreads viruses like wildfire, or the one that has very low risk of catching and spreading viruses?

Yes. But internet security was a very new thing since very few people had access to the early internet. The Unix security model has been massively rewritten in the last 18 years and has proven itself to be very secure.

ANY system is hackable. Hackers go for the biggest bang, so they target Windows, since it is the dominant OS.

That said, I believe OSX and Linux are both more secure for a number of reasons, but neither are impervious.

    Touché

Wellllllll.......as far as it's possible to be sure with a Bill-ware box I think I'm ok.....Ask me again in 5 minutes. But hey, as any Bill-ware box user will tell you, a virus is just a sign that someone cares about us
