Ok linux folks, got a challenge fer ya!

    Had pentium 4 rig in garage and put suse on it then Sabayon and it worked with both.

    Today swapped my windows drive into the rig and it won't boot. Nothing I can do will get it to boot - put a vista drive in and it won't boot. Put the sabayon drive in and it boots fine.

    NOW DON'T TELL me it is just spoiled and wants Linux! :laugh:

    I pulled bios battery out and cleared bios numerous times and still it will not boot to windows. The windows drive went back to my other rig and works fine.

    Does Linux mess with bios and change it and if so how do I get it to change back?

    When I try to get windows to boot it does the memory check and sometimes listed a note "cpu ratio changed" and tells me to change it in setup - however there is nothing like that in setup.

    Ideas I hope will flow freely from your minds :thumbs:

    Is the hard drive with Windows originally from the same rig? Windows activates according to the hardware it detects...thanks to Microsoft's oppressive validation, not wanting you to load it on multiple machines. Maybe the Master Boot Record is corrupt. You can use the Windows CD to repair the MBR and try that. That is a weird problem, but sounds like a Windows issue, not a Linux one, since Linux boots fine. Very odd.

    But maybe you are right...your computer is spoiled by a quality OS and doesn't want to have anything less! :laugh:

    The rigs aren't identical but very similar, both p4s and cheaper mother boards. both about the same age.

    Posted on a linux board so will see if they have any ideas.

    This could be the problem then. Even with identical hardware, Windows checks serial numbers I believe. It thinks you are installing on more than one machine. Just another reason to love Linux. You can install on as many machines as you want, no problem...and it's perfectly legal...and in fact, encouraged.

    The fellows at the linux board agree with your thought and said that linux does not mess with bios so I learned lots more yesterday :thumbs:

    My main rig is going out and thought I would just drop the drive I've been using into the wife's old rig but thanks to Billy Willy I won't be doing that :laugh:

    Thanks Trotter, I tried to repair my install on the main rig that has been giving trouble but it did not offer the repair option.

    I was thinking of a reinstall but have been fighting problems since NOV. so kind of gave up on it - got a new rig this morning, so will have two in the garage :laugh: for awhile till I get time to see about fixing them. They are both several years old and cheapys at that.
