Okay, for those technical types...

    Is it possible to play a track using an original CD without vocals? Can you preserve the instrumental just as it is, but take the vocal out? The reason why I'm asking is because we have a show coming up. I really like the instrumentals, but not the vocals. The karaoke tracks I've heard sound terrible, very muffled.

    The short answer: no. Not unless it's recorded in "split-track" fashion.

    What song are you trying to get the instrumental track to?

    Um... I didn't say anything about secular or sacred. Don't get touchy on me. :)

    There is software you can buy that will take the vocal tracks off. I think my sister has it. I'll ask her about it.

    I do karaoke a lot and the tracks they use are terrible.

    Karaoke tracks are awful! What kind of software does your sister use, brother Mike? I'd really like to stick to the original as much as possible. Also, can tracks be slowed down? There is one that is....okay... but it's much too fast!

    The short answer is yes. Forensic software exists that will remove different sounds from an audio file; however, it would be very expensive. A more common software for this, and one I have used in the past, is Adobe Audition. It has a built-in vocal remover. Some files work quite well and other not at all.

    As far as slowing down tracks, I remember a piece of software called The Amazing Slowdowner. Reportedly, it would slow down a CD track without changing the key so that the song might be learned more easily. I would imagine there is a plug-in for Winamp that would do the same thing, as there is a plug-in that changes the key of a file without slowing it down or speeding it up.

    I just want to re-emphasize that software such as Audition doesn't universally work. A friend of mine purchased the software because he really wanted to erase the vocals off one particular song...and it didn't work well. Wasted bucks.

    A few of your very high-end CD component decks (rack-mount, professional-quality players) will pitch bend without changing the tempo (much, if any).

    Also, keep in mind the copyright law thingy if you're planning on recording, etc.

    My hubby, in addition to being a pastor, has extensive experience being an audio engineer and computer hardware/software engineer in the audio industry. That said, he said that the software out there works somewhat but not completely. BUT he's found online some sources of ORIGINAL studio tracks for songs (he's using stuff from worship songs for church) and it's been GREAT. He can get full instrumental, backgrounds and whatever - then cut out what he needs to cut out and use what he needs to use (say, if he is missing the bass player). I'll have to find out where he gets it from.

    Oh, and he designed one of the first machines that could speed up or slow down audio to fit a particular time period without changing the pitch (VERY useful for commercials)! :) I remember the cheering in the basement that went on when they finally got that part working! LOL!

    I use Creative Mediasource, and it will change speeds of a track without changing the pitch. I have changed keys of a track by slowing it down (or speeding it up), saving it, then playing it on Creative Mediasource at the speed I want, and recording that. It works great for those of who can't sing as high as we need to.

    I have heard of software that removes vocals but never used it.
    I do use a plug in for Pro Tools called time compression/expansion.

    It too works well on some but not so well on others.

    Serato pitch and time is supposed to be really good but it is fairly expensive and I am not sure if you can use it without a DAW progam such as Pro Tools or Logic.
