One thing that irks me about Magnum, P.I. (they are always saying OMG). Another think is that Magnum is always sleeping around.

I believe all such jargon is taking the Lord's name in vain. "Judas Priest", "Gosh Darn it" "Cheese and crackers", etc. While all might be sterile in a legalistic sense, they all reflect the same attitude of the heart that takes the Lord's name in vain.

"Cheese and crackers"? What's wrong with food? How is there a problem with that?

Went to Google and looked up "cheese and crackers". After getting past the numerous food links, I came to an Urban Dictionary and saw what odd meaning some people have given to a food reference. Makes no sense to me. Which leads me to one of my gripes - I am almost 63 years old and I am not around young adults much at all. But from what I have heard on some TV shows and movies and I end up having to look phrases up, I am rather tired of phrases that meant one thing when I was growing up in the 60s meaning something sexual or something totally different from what it meant 30-50 years ago. It seems like young people today can take just about any phrase and turn it into something sexual.

Rant ended.

Judas Priest takes God's name in vein?

I don't know that all such exclamations reflect the same attitude as does taking God's name in vain (I'm actually not sure that using the word "God" and a curse word is worse than the US proclaiming it's trust in God on its currency.

My dad did a lot of cussing, but seldom when we were very young. By the time I (the second of 4) was about 11, I heard his GD's and s---'s about every day. One day a few years later he was barking at me about something at the dinner table and added "...be damn sure you don't...(whatever it was)." I replied "I damn sure will!" Then he cracked me over that-- "Watch your language too! If there's any cussin' to be done here, I'll do it!" Such hypocrisy.

All that time both grandmothers of mine were very devout, and he certainly never cussed around them-- more hypocrisy. But those grandmothers of mine did exclaim with such phrases as "My Lord!" Alright-- what's the difference between this 'OMG' and expressing surprise or frustration with ML? After all, they refer to the same Person, don't they?

If you want to cuss, your choice of cuss words does not matter. It's your wanting to cuss that matters.

My experience is that most do not cuss out of a desire to cuss. They use words to express emotion or as an exclamation. That said, Christians shouldn't cuss (that can be defended biblically).

BUT please show me in Scripture where Christians are commanded not to use expressions (as "darn", for example) to communicate emotion or to indicate exclamation in verbal communication. Or do you have a list of acceptable words (like "oh", "ouch", "well"....and a list of unacceptable words like "freckles", "shoot", "dagnabit".....for example). Or is it simply that expressions of emotion should be restricted to volume and tone? Or are Christian's commanded to exclude emotion all together in verbal communication?

If hatred is the motive, the choice of words does not matter. If love is the motive the words will reflect that.
