This is taken from Francis Chan's new book, "MULTIPLY"....I believe that Chan is on to something....what do you think?

Q. What would you say is one of the biggest myths about evangelism in the church today?

A. There are a couple of things. I don’t know what the biggest one is. I think one of the biggest problems is that no one feels like it’s their job.

I hear pastors say: “Well, it’s not really my job to go out and share my faith with people. I’m really supposed to equip the people to do that … ”

And the people say: “Well, I’m not a preacher, so I don’t like to preach to anyone. I just try to show them by having a nice life … ”

Bottom line: No one is really getting the Gospel out. The truth is, it’s everyone’s job.

If pastors were out sharing their faith, then they could say: “Follow me; I’ll make you a fisher of men. Watch how I do it.” There would be a sense of discipleship where people can come along.

Instead, we give sermons about fishing and PowerPoints about fishing and books about fishing, but who’s actually out there fishing and taking someone along with them? That’s the problem. Pastors aren’t doing it, so then the sheep don’t have that type of example.

The truth is, the believers should be doing it themselves and showing other believers—“This is what I do in my workplace, look at how I share with them, notice how I got into this guy’s life and how we go golfing together, and after a while, he got to see my life, and I got to lay out the Gospel.” We’re not discipling people in that.

What we do is a big church program, send out fliers and, if you have enough courage, maybe tell your friend to come to “Jesus on Ice” or whatever program we’ve got going on, but we’re still not fluent in Scripture. It’s so weird to people that Jesus is the most important thing to us, yet we’re so awkward in talking about it.

Good stuff. And an increasing problem with our society that has an ever-growing physical disconnect, replacing "face to face" with electronic means that leads to ever-increasing social disfunction....

I tell you the truth Don, that they have all become dysfunctional (in NJ Anyway) in one way or another. Here is a recent example.....I have been visiting with a Church in my community for a few weeks. A fellow , another visitor also happens to be there. I say hello & try to be welcoming. After service, the guys got questions. Now mind you, I'm a visitor myself. The entire church runs out after service leaving me to answer this guys questions & I'm not even a member. NUTS!!! :Rolleyes

First of all I would develop a relationship with this man... Find out about him and tell him about yourself... He may have questions but get to know each other... We have superficial relationships on here... What do we really know about each other besides a few interactions on here... What if we met face to face would I say EWF (sorry I forgot your first name) I believe it is Larry what you think about this portion of scripture?... I wanna know you... I can find out what you believe later... I know one thing you did come to church... Hey I came to the same church too... From my understanding you see this guy as a nuisance maybe its an opportunity to share what you believe... EWF I don't see you backing down here and I don't see you backing down there either... first Glen.....my name is Steve.

I did not consider this guy a nuisance.....quite the reverse. I spent time with him. What I am attempting to say is that no member of the church.....even the pastor, spent any time with the guy. Why is that do you think?
