If it is unconstitutional for a state to leave the union then what is the pragmatic difference between the US government and the Mafia?

 

Salty, thanks for posting that link. Didn't have time, right now to read all of it. Read about a 1/4 of the beginning & then skipped to the end. Hope to get back to the middle, too.

It's sad that so much of the actual history of this country is being painted out for political gain. It's sad that so few actually read and learn for themselves what the Consitution and the Republic was supposed to be about.

Come to think of it, isn't the the same thing that's happening with the scriptures. Wonder how many people across this country have actually read a single Bible verse today?

 

I too read some, and will the rest later. His work is very good and accurate. I do not know if the way history was written the way it was in textbooks for example, because of an agenda, or to facilitate the ease of teaching American history in a limited amount of time.

There were obviously many, many forces at work that caused the war. It seems to me one could point to greed in the northeast as much of a reason as the issue of slavery. History portrays the war as a noble cause against slavery, when in fact, a good part of the movtivation is greed and profit. It reminds you of politicians today, who campaign against abortion when they have past records supporting it and then do nothing when they get in office.

It is quite ironic that Republicans were once the enemy of the South, and Democrats a friend. Talk about a reversal of roles. The Democrat Party was the dominate southern party until the sixties.

The history of the Civil War where I live is fascinating, in Kentucky. It is almost like each side wanted a hands off approach to the state, to keep it in favor of either given side. There were skirmishes around Paducah, that changed hands several times. There is a state park on the Mississippi River, about seventy miles south of Cairo, called Columbus Belmont State Park. Aside from the battles, the main theme is the giant linked chain the Confederacy put across the Mississippi to stop Union traffic. Some of the chain is on display at the park.
